One of the most valuable perks of the best travel credit cards is the ability to transfer your points to partner airlines or hotel loyalty programs. This opens the door to a variety of travel options, giving you greater flexibility in how you choose to redeem your points.

Ideally, you want your points to transfer at a rate of 1:1 when you move your travel rewards to a partner program, preserving the value of your points in the process. But Citi is doing one better: Right now, you can get a 25% bonus when you transfer your Citi ThankYou Points to Qantas.

In other words, for every 1,000 Citi ThankYou Points you transfer to Qantas, you’ll receive 1,250 Qantas Points. And transferring your Citi ThankYou Points has the potential to increase their value from ~1 cent each to upwards of 5 cents each, depending on how you end up redeeming them.

This is a limited time offer, ending 11:59 PM EST on February 22, 2020 — so you’ve got just over a month to take advantage of this opportunity. So, let’s take a look at why this deal might be a great one for you.

Citi ThankYou Points Qantas Bonus

What can I do with transferred Qantas Points?

Qantas is Australia's national carrier and largest domestic and international carrier, operating flights to and around Australia and a variety of key destinations globally. It is also regularly ranked among the world’s top airlines.

You can use your transferred Qantas Points to not only fly with Qantas but also a number of Qantas travel partners. Qantas is a member of Oneworld Alliance and has a large number of partner airlines that can take you to over 1,200 destinations around the globe. This includes partner airlines such as American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, and Japan Airlines, as well as non-alliance partners like Emirates (because who wouldn’t love to fly in Emirates first-class on points, right?)

So whether you want your next trip to be to a luxurious overwater bungalow in Malaysia or a flight in one of Emirates’s top-ranked first-class suites, you have a huge selection of airlines and award opportunities available to you.

Note: If that bungalow sounded great, transfer your Citi ThankYou Points to Qantas to book a stay at the 5-star Berjaya Langkawi Resort and the rest can be transferred from Qantas to a number of partners that fly from the U.S. to Malaysia.

Of course, you can also use your Qantas points for flight upgrades, hotel stays, and more.

Maximizing your Citi ThankYou Point transfer

This 25% Qantas bonus ends February 22, 2020, which means you only have a month to start racking up Citi ThankYou Points to transfer to get the bonus in time.

Credit card welcome bonuses are the best and quickest way to earn a significant amount of points from the spending you’re already doing. But keep in mind, you will need to hit the minimum spend requirement — often $4,000 within the first three months for most top-tiered travel cards — in less than a month to take advantage of this limited time bonus.

You can earn a ton of points toward one of your favorite destinations by opening up any of the following Citi credit cards:

Citi card Welcome offer Continued ThankYou Point earning potential
Citi Premier® Card Earn 80,000 bonus points after spending $4,000 in the first 3 months 3X points at restaurants, supermarkets, and gas stations, and on air travel and hotels; and 1X points on all other purchases
Citi Rewards+® Card Earn 20,000 points after spending $1,500 on purchases in the first 3 months (plus, earn 5X points at restaurants, up to $6,000 in the first 12 months, then 1X points thereafter) 2X points at supermarkets and gas stations on the first $6,000 in purchases per year (and then 1X points thereafter), and 1X points on all other purchases
Citi® Double Cash Card - 18 month BT offer Earn $200 cash back after spending $1,500 in the first 6 months (limited time offer) up to 2% cash back on all purchases: 1% as you buy and 1% as you pay for those purchases. Then, convert your cash back to ThankYou Points.

In order to transfer your Citi ThankYou Points to an eligible transfer partner, you must hold either the Citi Premier® Card or the now discontinued Citi Prestige Card, but these aren’t the only Citi cards that allow you to earn ThankYou points. You can earn a lot of points, in fact, by using the Citi Double Cash Card for your everyday spending, then pooling those points with those from your Citi Premier Card or Citi Prestige Card.

Bottom line

This isn’t the first time Citi has offered a transfer bonus to Qantas, and considering the short window for this current bonus, you may be better off waiting to see if Qantas offers something similar in the future. In the meantime, you can use any of the above credit cards to build up more ThankYou Points that you could transfer.

But if this bonus has inspired you, or you are already a fan of Citi’s rewards system, you can bump up your balance of Citi ThankYou Points with any of the above-mentioned cards and then take advantage of this limited-time offer. Just promise you’ll send us pictures from your first-class Emirates seat or your overwater bungalow, okay?
