Fast Money: 4 Apps That Can Help You Save Lots of Money

Looking to earn money fast? There’s an app for that.
3 minute read | 2/19/19Feb. 19, 2019

There’s an app for pretty much everything these days, especially when it comes to spending money. You can get your groceries delivered, snag sale items with one-click shopping – you can even hire a local dog walker in a matter of minutes.

But wouldn’t it be great to save some money to help balance out all that spending?

One of my big goals for 2018 is to save more money – especially on everyday things.

Thankfully, with a handful of free apps, it couldn’t be easier. In fact, they do most of the work for me! By incorporating these into my regular shopping routine, the savings are adding up quickly and helping me reach my goal.

Here are four apps to help you do the same.

Ibotta is a free mobile app that gives you the opportunity to earn cash back on select items at a variety of popular stores.

Once you buy an item that has an Ibotta offer, it’s easy to provide proof of purchase by uploading a photo of your receipt. Then, you’ll receive cash back in your account within a few days.

The reason I like using Ibotta so much is that it’s easy to stack with other ways to save. For example, if I have a printed manufacturer coupon, I can stack that with my Ibotta offer and use my favorite cash back card to pay for it all.

Example: Let’s say a bottle of shampoo costs $4.00 and you have a $1.50 manufacturer coupon and $1.00 Ibotta offer. The transaction could look like this if you use a cash back rewards card like I do:

  • $4 shampoo - $1.50 coupon = $2.50
  • Purchase it using a 1.5% cash back card = $2.37
  • Once home, provide proof of purchase to redeem Ibotta offer. Final price = $1.37

Dosh is another free mobile app that offers cash back with a twist – there’s nothing to scan, no receipt photos to upload, and no promo codes to worry about.

By linking your credit or debit cards to the Dosh app, you’ll get eligible cash back returns auto-magically!

Several big retailers, hotels chains, restaurant groups, and more have partnered with Dosh to offer some of the best (and easiest!) discounts out there, so it’s definitely worth taking a minute to check it out.

Drop is a free mobile app that automatically adds points to your account for spending at certain merchants you’ve picked from their list.

When you reach a certain threshold, your Drop points can be redeemed for gift cards at popular retailers like

  • Amazon
  • Starbucks
  • Lyft
  • Whole Foods
  • Best Buy

Note: You can select up to five merchants to redeem cash back with.

I like that Drop is so intuitive and offers several reward options that I know I’ll use and enjoy. You can also up the reward potential by earning credit card rewards points, shopping portal points, and rotating category bonuses in addition to using the app!

Chances are you’ve probably heard of or seen Ebates, but if you haven’t signed up for a free account yet, it’s definitely worth it.

Ebates offers cash back discounts, exclusive promo codes and coupons at over 2,000 stores, so the odds of earning cash back on your purchases are pretty good!

Three Easy Ways to Earn

Once you sign up for a free account, you can save in a variety of ways.

Ebates App - download the app to earn cash back anywhere, anytime (available on iOS and Android)

Ebates Cash Back Button – download the browser extension to easily activate Ebates while shopping on your computer

In-Store Cash Back – Ebates now offers in-store discounts when you link your credit card to an offer and shop in stores as you normally would

I use a combination of all three ways to really maximize my savings, but you can choose whatever is best for you.

Either way, it feels good to save money!
