Rite Aid, the popular drug and convenience store, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last October. Alongside the bankruptcy announcement, the chain stated it would begin closing several store locations as it tries to keep financially afloat.
If you rely on your local Rite Aid for prescription refills, over-the-counter meds, or even to just save money on essentials, snacks, and other goods, keep reading to make sure your store isn’t closing soon.

California has the highest number of Rite Aid closings this year, with 22 planned closures announced in January.
Two locations are in Los Angeles—one on West Slauson Avenue and another on Wilmington Avenue. Neither store is currently listed among the 13 remaining Los Angeles sites, and both seem to be closed.
The rest of the state also faces several Rite Aid closures, with at least 20 additional closings recently announced.
In addition to L.A., here are the other California cities where Rite Aid is closing up shop:
- Lakewood
- San Diego
- Needles
- North Hollywood
- Fontana
- Livermore
- Hemet
- Westminster
- Studio City
- La Crescenta
- Tustin
- Susanville

Of the 25 Maryland Rite Aid locations, only one in Westminster is set to face closure later this year.
At publication time, this store is still among the 25 operational sites and is currently listed as open.
Massachusetts
One Rite Aid location in Massachusetts was included on the list of 53 closures in Fall River.
Both the pharmacy and store at this location are listed as currently open and operational.

Michigan
Two Michigan Rite Aid locations are set to close in 2024 as well.
The 15 Mile Road location in Sterling Heights, on 15 Mile Road, and the sole Novi location are both currently operational but are slated to close soon.
New Jersey
Several Rite Aids in New Jersey will be closing their doors this year:
- Berlin
- Toms River
- Marlton
- Pennsauken
- Lake Hiawatha
However, all of these locations are currently open and are among the 72 operational Rite Aids in the state.
New York
Two locations in Brooklyn and three in the Bronx are facing closure this year, in addition to stores in the following areas:
- Lake Ronkonkoma
- Huntington Station
- Tonawanda
- Buffalo
- East Meadow
- Lockport
- Amherst
- Queens Village
- Brentwood
- Rego Park
- Staten Island
Ohio
Several Ohio Rite Aids have been shuttered since the October announcement, and more with each subsequent announcement.
Some pharmacies closing in just the state's northern region include the Toledo, Lakewood, and Massillon locations. Pharmacies will close in early May, and the store itself will be permanently closed on June 13.
Other Rite Aid stores will close throughout Ohio, including locations in Cleveland, Maryland, Waveryly, and two locations in Warren.
Oregon
Rite Aids will also close in the Pacific Northwest this year. Both locations are in or near Portland.
The Gresham location is permanently closed, and the Portland location was slated to close in early February. A Rite Aid distribution center in the state is also set to shutter.
Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania, the home state of Rite Aid, is expecting closures in the following cities:
- Exton
- Steelton
- Media
- East Stroudsburg
- State College
- Downington
- York
- Kennett Square
Eight additional stores in the Philadelphia area are also closing.

Virginia
Two Virginia stores closed earlier this year — one in Hayes and another in Suffolk. Both are permanently closed, and the Hayes location was posted for sale on March 29.
More Virginia closures were announced in April, both in Virginia Beach.
The Laskin Road location is still listed as open but is set to close on June 13, while the Salem Road location closed its pharmacy in April and will close its store on May 23.
Washington
Four Rite Aid stores in Washington state are set to shut down this year as well:
- Belfair
- Everett
- Seattle
- Walla Walla
Sadly, the Seattle location was previously Bartell Drugs, a 130-year-old Seattle drugstore chain. Rite Aid bought the location in 2020, and it is now reportedly closed.
Bottom line
Amidst economic turmoil, residual effects of the pandemic, and controversy surrounding the popular drugstore chain, it may not be surprising to many that more than 100 Rite Aid stores are set to close this year.
Even if your local Rite Aid wasn’t listed as one impacted by the mass closures, keep an eye out. Additional announcements are possible, and you may have to find a new pharmacy or try out a Sam’s Club or Costco membership to keep more cash in your wallet.
