Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about return protection? We've answered the most common ones below — including what qualifies, how to file a claim, and how much you could get back.

What is return protection?

Return protection is a credit card benefit that reimburses you for an eligible purchase when the retailer won't take it back. You file a claim with your card issuer, they review it, and if approved, you’re reimbursed up to your card’s per-item limit, excluding shipping and handling. Think of it as a backup return window that starts where the store's ends.

How long do I have to use it?

Cards on this list give you 90 days from the purchase date. That's a hard deadline — not 90 days from when you tried to return it, and not 90 days from when the store said no.

How much will my card reimburse?

It depends on the card. Per-item limits on this list run from $250 to $500, and every card caps you at $1,000 per year. Those are reimbursement limits, not price limits — you can buy something more expensive and still file, you just won't get the full amount back.

Do I have to try returning it to the store first?

Yes. Return protection only kicks in after the retailer refuses. Most issuers will ask for proof, so save the receipt and a copy of the store's return policy.

What doesn't qualify?

Exclusions vary by card, but common carve-outs include jewelry, formal wear, books and magazines, personal hygiene products, perishables, live plants and animals, seasonal items, used or refurbished goods, and anything bought outside the U.S. Check your card's guide to benefits before you count on coverage.

Does return protection cover buyer's remorse?

Yes — and that's what makes it unusual. You don't need the item to be defective or damaged. Changing your mind is a valid reason, as long as the item is eligible and you're inside the window.

How is this different from purchase protection?

Purchase protection covers damage, loss, or theft. Extended warranty adds time to the manufacturer's coverage. Return protection is the only one of the three that covers simply not wanting the thing anymore.

How we chose these cards

FinanceBuzz evaluated a selection of cards from our partners, looking at various criteria including the annual fee, travel benefits, and bonus offers. We did not review all cards in the category and compensation was considered when evaluating and ordering the cards.
