Hybrid vehicles are not without their faults, but you can't go wrong with Toyota's proven track record and the efficiency gains from the dual-powered engine.

The gas LX model uses a 2.0-liter four with 150 horsepower and gets 32 city and 41 highway mpg. If you want the hybrid, the Sedan Hybrid starts at $29,395 and is rated 50/47, which keeps it inside this list.

RepairPal has it at $368 a year, based on average repair costs across 0.2 shop visits, ranking third out of 36 compact cars. This is the sedan you keep seeing on Marketplace at 180,000 miles with a "one owner" caption for a reason, because it lasts.

Chance of 200,000 miles: 33.9%

The CX-5 is all-new for 2026, and Mazda still puts an 187-horsepower 2.5-liter and a conventional 6-speed automatic in a class that mostly moved to CVTs. AWD is standard rather than optional. EPA estimate is 24/30/26.

RepairPal ranks the CX-5 first among 26 midsize SUVs at $447 per year, $126 below the $573 class average, with 0.28 shop visits and 8% of repairs rated severe. If you're in the market for a midsize SUV, it's hard to beat the CX-5.

Subaru has loaded the Crosstrek with lots of premium-level features all for an affordable price. With symmetrical AWD, 8.7 inches of ground clearance, and a 180-horsepower 2.5-liter BOXER four-cylinder engine, this car has all the trappings you'd expect from a car twice as expensive.

However, upkeep is the highest on this list. RepairPal puts the Crosstrek at $492 a year, while the HR-V sits at $301, and 7% of its repairs are rated severe, compared to 5% for the Honda.

Chance of 200,000 miles: 24.7%

The cheapest car on the list. The gas LE uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 169 horsepower and gets 32/41 mpg. The hybrid LE starts at $25,175. This model has been one of the most consistent and dependable for decades, so you know you're getting your money's worth.

RepairPal's average repair cost is $362 per year, which ranks the Corolla first among 36 compact cars. The Corolla also took a model-level award in J.D. Power's 2026 Vehicle Dependability Study, and ToyotaCare covers scheduled maintenance for two years or 25,000 miles.

Starting price: $24,650

Chance of 200,000 miles: 23.6%

The base 2.5 S runs a 186-horsepower 2.5-liter engine through a 6-speed automatic and returns 27/36/30. Front-drive is standard, though the Carbon Edition comes with i-ACTIV AWD and still sneaks in under the cap at $29,815, which is more than the Civic or Corolla will do. There is no hybrid, but there is a 250-horsepower turbo further up the range. The sedan is a 2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick+.

RepairPal puts upkeep at $433 a year across 0.33 shop visits, with 10% of jobs rated severe, ninth out of 36 compact cars. The 23.6% at the top of this entry undersells the car. Mazda3 owners drive 9,452 miles a year, the lowest figure on this list, so it takes 17.2 years to reach 162,916 miles. A Corolla covers roughly the same ground in 12.
