Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi

As might be expected, this card requires a Costco membership, and you typically need an excellent credit score — so it likely doesn’t make sense if you have a fair or bad credit score.

It has a $0 annual fee and offers 4% cash back on eligible gas and EV charging purchases (up to $7,000), 3% on restaurant and travel purchases, 2% on all other Costco purchases, and 1% on everything else.

This card doesn’t typically have any sort of sign-up bonus, though the everyday earning potential could more than make up for it.

The Costco Anywhere card is accepted anywhere in the world where Visa is accepted. It’s not strictly for use in Costco stores or on Costco.com. The only thing we don’t love is the redemption system, which happens only once per year in February — that’s when you’ll receive your rewards certificates for the previous year’s points in the mail.

But if you want a card specifically for Costco members, this definitely competes with other non-Mastercard options.

You could also earn 80,000 bonus points after spending $4,000 in the first 3 months.

While there is a $95 annual fee, the points you might receive from everyday earning and the welcome bonus could more than offset the cost. You could then redeem your points for travel, gift cards, and more. Or you could transfer them to over a dozen Citi travel partners, including JetBlue, Virgin Atlantic, and Singapore Airlines.

How to choose a gas rewards card

From 1993 to 2022, U.S. gas prices have ranged from about $1 per gallon to over $5 per gallon, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. As gas tends to get more expensive, the need to save money at the gas pump becomes more important.

Gas rewards credit cards offer opportunities to help soften the blow when you fill up your tank. Use these factors to help narrow down your choices and select the right gas rewards card for you:

  • Rewards rate: The higher the earning rate on gas, the more bonus rewards you could earn on visits to the gas station — whether you're filling up for work or on a fun road trip.
  • Sign-up bonus: If multiple cards have similar benefits, the card with the higher sign-up bonus might make the most sense.
  • Annual fee: Cards with annual fees typically offer more perks and benefits than no-annual-fee options. But if you’re new to credit cards or want to keep your overall costs low, a card without an annual fee might make the most sense.
  • Card issuer: Do you already have a relationship with a certain card issuer? If so, it might make sense to stick with them. But it’s also not a bad thing to have cards from multiple companies.
  • Personal or business: Choosing between personal or business credit cards could significantly alter your available options.
  • Other benefits: What benefits do you want on a card? Look for your preferred benefits — whether it’s purchase protection, rental car insurance, or something else — while comparing credit card offers.

Methodology: How we compared these cards

These credit card offers were chosen because they offered the highest gas rewards in different scenarios. We tried to be inclusive by choosing a variety of cards from a variety of credit card issuers, including cash rewards credit cards, cards for people with good or excellent credit, and cards without any annual fees. These are all great credit cards to have in your wallet, but make sure you read the card details for any you're interested in before you fill out an application.

FAQs

What is the best gas credit card?

Are gas station credit cards worth it?

Gas station credit cards are often worth it if gas is a big expense for you. They could provide valuable rewards for each gas station purchase. For example, the Blue Cash Everyday Card offers 3% cash back at U.S. supermarkets, U.S. gas stations, and U.S. online retail purchases (up to $6,000 per year in each category).
