FIFA's Central Region of North America offers a wealth of cuisine, culture, and charm. Culturally speaking, Kansas City, Missouri, has an active jazz and live music scene. It's also known as the city of fountains, with more fountains than any other city besides Rome.

Both Dallas and Houston have a rich history of blues music, and offer up a myriad of diverse musical genres and live music. Tejano music is unique to Texas, with a blend of mariachi music from Mexico and polka (think accordions) from German, Czech, and Polish settlers. Monterrey, Guadalajara, and Mexico City, Mexico, also offer a wealth of vibrant and diverse music scenes.

Exploring these cities offers once-in-a-lifetime experiences. This guide will help you make the most out of trips to any of these FIFA central region locations.

There are a myriad of museums in the downtown area, including ones dedicated to art, science and nature, and flight.

Each team has its own stadium within the Dallas metro area, with the Mavericks and Stars sharing the American Airlines Center.

Dallas offers the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) to get around the city. DART operates a network of buses, light rail, and commuter rail. Space Center Houston is a must-see and offers a variety of educational programs to learn more about outer space.

Other professional sports teams in the region are the Houston Astros (MLB), Houston Dynamo FC (soccer), and Houston Rockets (NBA). Each team has its own stadium within the Houston metro area.

The Houston Metro is a major public transportation authority that operates both the bus and light rail systems in the area. The Metrorail has a terminal at Stadium Park/Astrodome, which is about a half-mile walk to NRG Stadium. Renting a car or using a rideshare service are also options for getting to the stadium or anywhere else you would like to visit in Houston.

Summer weather in Houston is characterized by hot, humid conditions. Due to its proximity to the Gulf Coast, the humidity can almost be unbearable at times. A few thunderstorms are also possible during the summer months. However, it's best to check the forecast each day for specific details. Stay hydrated, wear light clothes, and take frequent breaks if venturing out into the heat and humidity.

Monterrey

  • Venue: Estadio BBVA, Guadalupe, Nuevo León

Estadio BBVA is home to the C.F. Monterrey professional soccer club, which plays in Liga MX. Various levels of baseball, American football, boxing, and MMA are also prominent in Monterrey, offering sports fans other options. The city has a vibrant sports culture. Soccer is by far the most popular sport in the city, followed closely by baseball and boxing.

Monterrey's public transportation system includes rail (Metrorrey) and buses (the Ecovia Bus Rapid Transit (BRT)). The closest rail terminal to Estadio BBVA is about a 25-minute walk from the stadium. Renting a car or taking a ridesharing service might be a bit more convenient for this particular location.

Summer weather in Monterrey is hot and humid. A few thunderstorms are also possible during the summer months.

Mexico City

  • Venue: Estadio Azteca, Coyoacán, Mexico City
  • Local airport: Mexico City International Airport (MEX)

Mexico City is both the capital and largest city in Mexico, offering a wide range of activities and various cultural festivities to explore while visiting. The food scene is top-notch with fresh ingredients in almost every dish. Some street food must-haves are tacos, elotes, pozole, and tamales. There are plenty of museums in the area as well, spanning topics from Mayan artifacts to modern art to hands-on activities for children.

Estadio Azteca is home to the Club América soccer team that plays in Mexico's top tier professional soccer league, Liga MX. It is also home to the Mexico national soccer team. Mexico City is also home to two additional Liga MX professional soccer teams, Cruz Azul and Pumas UNAM. Each of those teams have different venues where they play home matches. Other popular professional sports include, but are not limited to baseball, boxing, and Formula 1 racing. Baseball, basketball, and lucha libre wrestling provide opportunities to experience other professional sports in the region and experience crowd energy like nowhere else in the world.

Mexico City has a public transit system that includes rail and bus options. There is a rail terminal near the stadium (Estadio Azteca terminal), which is about a 10 minute walk to the stadium. Car rentals and rideshare services are also viable options to get around the city.

The weather in Mexico City is mild and humid. Even though the city is the farthest south venue for FIFA soccer matches, it sits at an elevation of around 7,200 feet above sea level. The temperatures are cooler and manageable at this elevation. However, oxygen levels might not be what you're used to at that elevation either. Allow your body to adapt to the elevation, take it easy for the first few days, and stay hydrated. June and July are also the wet season in Mexico City, so be prepared for thunderstorms.

Atlas F.C. is another Guadalajaran professional soccer team in Liga MX. However, Atlas F.C. plays in a different stadium. Other sports in the region are baseball and boxing, offering sports enthusiasts other opportunities to view different athletic events.

The transit system in Guadalajara is the Sistema de Tren Eléctrico Urbano, or SITEUR. It is an urban rail system owned and operated by the state of Jalisco. There are no terminals near the stadium, so either renting a car or utilizing a rideshare service would be a better way to get to a FIFA match at the stadium.

Summer weather in Guadalajara is hot and humid. Summer is also the rainy season. It does not necessarily mean it will rain everyday, though. It's always best to check the forecast each day for specific details. Stay hydrated, wear light clothes, and take frequent breaks if venturing out into the heat and humidity.

Tips to build your perfect itinerary

While there's no such thing as a perfect itinerary, there are a few strategies that can help save some money while allowing yourself to splurge a bit on an experience of a lifetime. For booking flights, it's a good strategy to utilize either Google Flights or Skyscanner to set up notifications for price drops. Once you secure a good deal, then you could try to use rewards to extend or upgrade your trip.

Tickets to FIFA matches are being sold via a lottery system. They are already set around $2,000 per seat per game, so expect to pay more than that if purchasing on Ticketmaster or some other third party vendor. There is a small chance that tickets might even go for less than that for matches that might not appeal to the masses. Overall, maintaining a healthy mindset and allowing yourself to have fun witnessing a once in a lifetime event should be the theme of your itinerary while visiting a FIFA host city.
