If you are looking to stretch your restaurant budget, all-you-can-eat restaurants are appealing. The wide variety of options and unlimited refills make swallowing the cost of a restaurant meal much easier to do.
While we love a never-ending array of options as much as the next person, it's important to remember that buffets aren't automatically a bargain just because you can go back for seconds (or thirds). As restaurant prices increase, the value proposition has become harder to justify, especially at places that have smaller menus or are serving up cold food.
To that end, we've rounded up five buffet chains that just aren't worth it anymore, according to diners.
Earn $100 cash rewards bonus with this incredible card
The Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card (Rates and fees) has no annual fee and you can earn $100 cash rewards bonus after spending $500 in purchases in the first 3 months.
Cardholders can also earn unlimited 2% cash rewards on purchases.
The best part? There's no annual fee.
Golden Corral
Golden Corral is one of the most recognizable names in the buffet space. The chain built its reputation on the wide variety of items it offers, from carved meats and vegetables to down-home sides and freshly baked desserts.
However, some diners say that even that variety can no longer justify the chain's $15.99 to $18.99 dinner price.
Trustpilot reviews from 2026 pointed to the chain's stale food, limited options, and poor customer service as reasons the chain just isn't worth it anymore. Diners also point out that on certain holidays and for certain items, the chain charges an additional fee that isn't always clarified up front, leaving them with larger bills than they had anticipated.
Pizza Ranch
Pizza Ranch offers diners more than the name might suggest. Pizza is, of course, the focus, but the chain also serves things like fried chicken, mashed potatoes, salads, and a wide array of sweet treats.
Unfortunately, many diners complain that the buffet often has far fewer options available than it advertises. Reviewers on platforms like Tripadvisor have noted that, on some visits, only one to two varieties of pizza have been ready, and that even those choices have been cold and stale.
Guests also note that locations can be dirty and customer service poor, which makes the bill (which can reach up to $100 for a family of four, at some locations) feel far from worth it.
Shoney's
Shoney's is another familiar name for many diners. Founded in 1947, it serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and is renowned in some circles for its mashed potatoes and gravy.
However, in recent years, many diners have started to feel that the quality of its offerings no longer justifies the pricing, which ranges between $9.99 and $15.99 depending on location and time of day.
Burnt food, dwindling options, low quality, and poorly labeled entrees are just a few of the recurring complaints logged on platforms like Yelp.
On a more positive note, diners generally only have positive things to say about the service and cleanliness of the restaurants, making it one of the less egregious offenders on our list.
Earn as much as $1K doing simple online tasks
A company called Freecash has compiled all sorts of quick cash tasks from about a dozen advertisers and market research companies thirsty for more data. Freecash has paid out over $13 million to users since 2019, and has over 50,000 five-star reviews on Trustpilot.

Cicis
Another pizza spot, Cicis is widely recognized as one of the worst buffet chains in the industry.
The food quality is generally regarded as barely edible, the variety can be abysmal, and the locations are often dirty and understaffed, leading to a poor customer experience, according to diners.
However, the chain has undergone several rebrands in the last few years, indicating that it is making a concerted effort to turn things around. So, while many agree that the $9.99 price tag for adults just isn't worth it right now, that could always change.
Souper Salad
Once a beloved lunch destination, especially among the 9-5 crowd, Souper Salad has fallen off in recent years.
While it still offers a fairly extensive lineup of soup and salad options, many diners complain that the quality has dropped and offerings are typically lukewarm at best.
"I used to come here all the time, but it's been awful the last few times, so we won't be going back... I'm sorry to say, but it is not worth the price," one unsatisfied customer wrote on Tripadvisor.
Bottom line
Buffet chains may have a reputation as one of the most cost-effective ways to eat out, but when you stop to consider food quality, variety, and customer experience, things aren't always as cut and dry.
Don't get us wrong, buffets can still offer good value, especially for families, groups with different food preferences, and diners who genuinely enjoy a wide selection of dishes. But unlimited servings don't automatically translate into savings.
Golden Corral, Pizza Ranch, Shoney's, Souper Salad, and Cicis all have customers who appreciate their food and affordability.
At the same time, recent reviews show that inconsistent freshness, limited availability, and disappointing service can often undermine the value at many individual locations.
So next time you consider hitting up a buffet, be sure to check local prices, look for recent reviews, and consider what's included in the advertised rate. Drinks, taxes, and other extras can push the final bill higher than expected and push a chain into the surprising financial mistakes territory.
