You may be looking to stretch your fast food budget and find the best deals, and that includes not just cost but quality as well. Sadly, it's becoming more common to not just be shocked by the price, but also to take a disappointing first bite that's barely better than being hungry.

Truth is, many times, the cost of fast food chains no longer offers significant savings or kills cravings like they used to. You might be better off finding a local spot that offers a budget-friendly full entree with sides to go.

Pizza Hut

This pizza chain, known for a distinctive building style, is shutting down 250 stores in the first half of this year — and it's no wonder when the price of a basic large pepperoni pizza is about $20. Customers can tell the ingredients have all been downgraded to maximize profits. As one Redditor put it, "they are sucking every dollar out of this brand before they go under (it's inevitable)."

Wendy's

If you're craving that square beef patty and a classic Frosty, it now costs about $10. And you're getting less than you used to. An anonymous employee revealed on Reddit that the cup sizes have gone down, but the price has increased.

Despite the price hikes for smaller servings, Wendy's is still moving to close approximately 5% of their store footprint in the U.S. That's about 300 to 350 stores across the country. Last year, the company suffered a sales drop of 5.2% within the U.S., but internationally, the sales increased. Then again, they have different sources and ingredients abroad that are often of higher quality.

Papa John's

Pizza is supposed to be the trifecta of fast, cheap, and delicious. Papa John's charges nearly $20 for a basic large pepperoni, and it's going about as well as it is for Pizza Hut, which is to say they are shutting down roughly 200 locations this year. Comparatively, a Little Caesars large pepperoni is about $7.

McDonald's

Those golden double arches are the quintessential symbol of American fast food, but McDonald's is pricing itself out of the market. Low-income families can no longer afford to grab a Happy Meal for the kids after a long day or swing through the drive-thru for lunch. The fast food giant is trying to win customers back with in-app deals, but most people don't want to jump through hoops to chase digital coupons just to grab a fast food meal.

Subway

Oh, how the mighty have fallen since the long-gone days of the $5 Footlong. Subway is still relatively cheap compared to competitors. However, spending a minimum of $8 for a 12" sandwich that arrives looking wilted has customers opting to spend a few extra dollars when they need a sandwich on the go.

It also offers the smallest sub of all the sandwich chains; it might be about a foot long, but it is very thin compared to the bread at Jersey Mike's or Firehouse.

Chick-fil-A

They used to have the chicken sandwich on lock, but it's like Chick-fil-A gave up as soon as Popeye's dropped a dupe. "Chick-fil-A was good like a decade ago. The sandwich had that fat piece of chicken on a nice bun with those yummy pickles. Now it's none of those things," said Redditor XThePlaysTheThingX. Both sandwiches are priced about the same, around the $5 mark.

Chipotle

A TikToker went viral for asking Chipotle why her burrito bowl cost almost $20, and it clearly resonated with customers. Spoiler alert: yes, she got the guac. At its peak, customers were willing to pay a few extra bucks for a burrito the size of a baby's head made with fresh ingredients, but both the size and the freshness have deteriorated over time.

Bottom line

Local independent restaurants are increasing in popularity as fast food chains decline. Take-out and third-party delivery apps make it just as convenient as chain restaurants, and customers find they pay only slightly more for generous and fresh portions that can often become leftovers to get more bang for their buck.

When it comes to food, it isn't just about the price. Customers are looking for a balance between price, taste, and quantity. Consumers might be trying to keep more cash in their wallets, but not at the expense of their taste buds.
