Chain restaurants are continuing to announce closures this year, and Pizza Hut is the latest. The economic downturn has resulted in consumers looking for ways to lower their food budget instead of going out to eat more, and restaurants are responding by closing underperforming locations. Pizza Hut is set to close about 250 locations in the first half of 2026 as part of its parent company's strategic review of the brand.

Learn everything we know so far about the iconic pizza chain's reduction in store footprint.

When Pizza Huts are closing

Yum! Brands announced in their recent earnings call they would be closing about 250 underperforming stores in the first half of 2026. This is part of a strategic review that was announced last November, which also indicated they are considering a possible sale of Pizza Hut. The parent company also owns brands such as Taco Bell and KFC.

Where Pizza Huts are closing

A specific list of locations expected to close has not yet been released, but these closures are likely to occur throughout the U.S.

Why Pizza Huts are closing

The closures are part of Yum! Brands "Hut Forward" plan. Pizza Hut has had declining sales for several recent quarters, and part of its strategy is to shutter underperforming stores.

Additionally, they are investing in the modernization of technology, vibrant marketing, and franchise agreements. Public sentiment is leaning in a different direction, summed up by Redditor JS-0522, who asks, "Why has Pizza Hut done everything except make good pizza again?"

How many Pizza Huts may be left

The 250 stores closing represent less than 2% of their global footprint, which is about 20,000 locations worldwide. There are approximately 6,700 Pizza Hut locations in the U.S. By the close of 2025, the chain operated 19,974 stores globally, down from 20,225 at the end of 2024. In the U.S., about 375 locations were closed in 2025. The Hut's footprint is shrinking, but it's not disappearing completely anytime soon.

Pizza Hut sales performance

Back in November, Yum! Brands announced Pizza Hut sales in the U.S. had declined by 7%. For the full year of 2025, sales dropped from $3.61 billion to $3.47 billion, and the executive suite believes the closures may impact core operating profit by roughly 15%.

How Pizza Hut compares to competitors

Consumers say Pizza Hut is expensive and not very good, two problems the executive "Hut Forward" plan does not actually address. A large plain cheese pizza is $15.19 from The Hut, while competitors like Little Caesars offer the same order for $7.29 and often with a much shorter wait time.

Even worse for pizza chains, many families are switching to frozen pizzas purely to save money as food prices are rising and impacting budgets. Third-party delivery has also impacted pizza chains, because customers are now able to order delivery from any restaurant, and the expanded delivery options mean pizza isn't the only thing that could be brought to your door on those nights you don't want to cook.

What this means for Yum! Brands

Pizza Hut may be struggling, but the other chains owned by Yum! Brands are doing well. Taco Bell had same-store sales up by 7% for the last quarter of 2025, and KFC was inching higher by 1%. Overall, shares of Yum! (YUM) have gone up about 6% this year, so they don't seem doomed to bankruptcy at this point.

Pizza Hut job losses

There are, as of yet, no official estimates on how many jobs are expected to be impacted by the 250 closings this year, but the 68 locations closed in the U.K. resulted in about 1,200 jobs lost. However, in a so-called pre-pack administration deal, Yum! Brands agreed to rescue 64 U.K. restaurants, safeguarding 1,276 jobs.

It is not yet clear how many positions in the U.S. could be affected, so be sure to follow local news updates for the latest information.

What's next for Pizza Hut

Yum! Brands is hopeful the result of their strategic review may lead to bolstered sales with a more efficient store footprint, but in reality, the closures may continue until profit margins are on the rise again.

The main customer complaints tend to be about pizza quality and price, so without addressing those and with unchanged economic conditions, there is fierce competition for customers looking for the best pizza to make the most of their bucks.

Bottom line

It remains to be seen if Pizza Hut plans to make a clear announcement about which locations are slated for closure, or if they are going to quietly close them down without fanfare in hopes that customers won't notice.

Pizza lovers have already been choosing to keep more cash in their wallets over going out to eat as often, and closing stores won't change that but it might help keep Pizza Hut in business until consumers have more discretionary spending in their budgets again.
