Chain restaurants are continuing to announce closures this year, and Pizza Hut is the latest. The economic downturn has resulted in consumers looking for ways to lower their food budget instead of going out to eat more, and restaurants are responding by closing underperforming locations. Pizza Hut is set to close about 250 locations in the first half of 2026 as part of its parent company's strategic review of the brand.

When Pizza Huts are closing
Yum! Brands announced that they would be closing about 250 underperforming stores in the first half of 2026 and also indicated they were considering a possible sale of Pizza Hut.
As of June 2026, Yum! Brands closed many locations, possibly up to 250 locations (there is no official public record provided by Yum! Brands), then announced they sold Pizza Hut to LongRange Capital (except in China, where Pizza Hut is now owned by Yum China Holdings).
Where Pizza Huts are closing
Yum! Brands did not provide a publicly available official list of 2026 Pizza Hut closures. But we do know locations in these cities were particularly affected.
California — Riverside, Bakersfield, Fresno, Fontana, and others
Florida — Orlando, Jacksonville, Tampa, and others
Georgia — Atlanta
Illinois — Chicago
Indiana — Indianapolis
Michigan — Detroit
Missouri — St. Louis
New York — Albany, Rochester, Syracuse
North Carolina — Charlotte
Ohio — Columbus, Cleveland, Beavercreek
Pennsylvania — Philadelphia
Texas — Dallas, Houston
Virginia — Richmond
Washington — Seattle
Why Pizza Huts are closing
The closures were part of Yum! Brands "Hut Forward" plan. Pizza Hut had declining sales for several quarters, and part of its strategy to survive was to shutter underperforming stores.
Additionally, they were investing in the modernization of technology, vibrant marketing, and franchise agreements. Public sentiment was leaning in a different direction, summed up by Redditor JS-0522, who asks, "Why has Pizza Hut done everything except make good pizza again?"

How many Pizza Huts may be left
The 250 closed stores represented less than 2% of Pizza Hut's global footprint. In the U.S., about 375 locations were closed in 2025, with about another 250 closed in 2026. As of June 2026, there are 19,985 Pizza Hut locations worldwide and 6,000 locations in the U.S. The Hut's footprint is shrinking, but it's not disappearing completely anytime soon.
Pizza Hut sales performance
Back in November 2025, Yum! Brands announced Pizza Hut sales in the U.S. had declined by 7%. For the full year of 2025, sales dropped from $3.61 billion to $3.47 billion. As of June 2026, sales are only down by 1%.
How Pizza Hut compares to competitors
Consumers say Pizza Hut is expensive and not very good, two problems the executive "Hut Forward" plan did not actually address. A large plain cheese pizza is $16.19 from The Hut, while competitors like Little Caesars offer the same order for $7.29 and often with a much shorter wait time.
Even worse for pizza chains, many families are switching to frozen pizzas purely to save money as food prices are rising and impacting budgets. Third-party delivery has also impacted pizza chains, because customers are now able to order delivery from any restaurant, and the expanded delivery options mean pizza isn't the only thing that could be brought to your door on those nights you don't want to cook.
What this means for Yum! Brands
Pizza Hut may be struggling, but that's LongRange Capital's problem now. The other chains owned by Yum! Brands are doing well. Taco Bell had same-store sales up by 7% for the second quarter of 2026, and KFC was inching higher by 2%. Overall, shares of Yum! (YUM) have gone up 0.8% this year.
Pizza Hut job losses
There are no official estimates on how many jobs were impacted by the 250 closings this year. In 2025, 68 UK restaurants and 11 delivery sites were slated to close, putting 1,210 jobs at risk. However, Yum! Brands rescued 64 Pizza Hut UK restaurants through a pre-pack administration, preserving approximately 1,276 jobs in the end.
What's next for Pizza Hut
LongRange Capital says it is looking forward to "working with Pizza Hut's talented team and franchise partners" to drive the next phase of growth through investments aimed at delivering consistently good food and customer experiences.
The main customer complaints tend to be about pizza quality and price, so it sounds like they may be aiming to finally give customers what they want. But with unchanged economic conditions, there is fierce competition for customers looking for the best pizza to make the most of their bucks.

Bottom line
Now that the Pizza Hut closures are complete and a new company has bought the business, it'll be interesting to see if LongRange Capital can deliver on their vision by delivering the best pizza experience.
Pizza lovers have already been choosing to keep more cash in their wallets over going out to eat as often, so the future of Pizza Hut is uncertain.
