Few expenses can drain Social Security benefits as quickly as unexpected repair costs from an unreliable vehicle, high depreciation rates, or a steep purchase price. These are just a few reasons why retirees on a fixed budget should avoid certain vehicles if they don't want their golden years burdened by financial strain.

According to the Social Security Administration, the average monthly benefit for a retired worker is approximately $2,071. As such, there are certain cars that seniors should simply steer clear of to make the most of what they live on. Which are worth avoiding? These 10 vehicles could potentially endanger your retirement savings.

Retirees in the market for a reliable three-row SUV should steer clear of the 2023 GMC Arcadia. According to RepairPal, this hulking SUV is near the bottom of its segment in terms of reliability. They rank it as one of the most unreliable midsize SUVs on the market.

Average Price: $35,262

Owners themselves have complained about issues with the 2025 Chevrolet Blazer EV's technology. They've had problems with the infotainment screen freezing and numerous issues with its music system. They also experienced service delays trying to get these issues fixed and had challenges charging the vehicle.

Plus, reviewers have criticized this EV for offering lackluster value given its high starting price compared to other electric SUVs. With options added on, the electric SUV costs nearly as much as a Cadillac, but it's still just a Chevy.

2025 Jeep Gladiator

Average Price: $44,111

The 2025 Jeep Gladiator has been criticized for offering poor value to consumers. According to Edmunds, virtually every other truck in the midsize segment will offer superior standard features and better driving aids. It's also a vehicle that is heavily focused on off-roading, limiting its practicality as a daily driver.

Additionally, it's quite a gas guzzler, which isn't ideal for someone living on a strict budget. Retirees in the market for a midsize truck that can serve them well on any terrain should look elsewhere.

According to CarGurus, the average price of a used vehicle sits at $27,901. Anyone on a fixed budget looking to enjoy a stress-free retirement should avoid unreliable vehicles given a price like that.

EVs and hybrid vehicles are particularly problematic in this regard because the average cost of an EV battery replacement can range from $4,000-$18,000. That's certainly not an expense that anyone wants to spend their hard-earned retirement savings on.
