There's always a risk that someone will steal your vehicle. After all, alarms are only intended as theft deterrents. They won't stop a hardened criminal who really wants your car for a joy ride or highly valuable parts.
Staying informed about auto theft trends may be a smart money move if you own a car. FinanceBuzz looked at data from the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) to identify the most stolen car in every state.
From sedans to pickups, we've rounded up the most stolen cars across the nation. Is your vehicle popular in your state?
Subaru Forester
/images/2025/07/08/subaru-forester.jpg)
State where the Subaru Forester is the most stolen vehicle:
- Vermont (25 stolen)
The Subaru Forester's crossover SUV design makes it a good option for rugged, mountainous Northeastern states. Maybe that explains why the Foresters were stolen more than any other vehicle in Vermont.
Sure, only 25 were stolen in 2024, but that's quite a bit for a state with fewer than 650,000 people and a low crime rate.
Nissan Maxima
/images/2025/02/10/nissan-altima-display-at-dealership.jpg)
State where the Nissan Maxima is the most stolen vehicle:
- Tennessee (1,501 stolen)
The Nissan Maxima doesn't make the list of the top 10 most-stolen vehicles in the U.S. But the thieves of Tennessee stole 1,501 in 2024.
Given that 19,692 vehicles were stolen in the state that year, the Maxima accounted for 7.6% of all thefts.
Honda CR-V
/images/2024/06/12/honda-cr-v-hybrid-adobe.jpg)
State where the Honda CR-V is the most stolen vehicle:
- New York (1,776 stolen)
The Honda CR-V gets favorable reviews for its comfortable interior and impressive CVT transmission. It's also a bit pricey, with 2024 models typically costing $30,895 to $37,555.
Are New York car thieves more interested in the interior or what's under the hood? We may never know, but they removed 1,776 from the streets in 2024.

GMC Savana
/images/2025/07/22/chevrolet_express_gmt610.jpg)
State where the GMC Savana is the most stolen vehicle:
- New Hampshire (19 stolen)
The GMC Savana isn't exactly a luxury vehicle. It lacks an infotainment system and doesn't offer much in the way of style. However, it's a powerful van with an exceptional tow rating.
That makes it a tempting target for thieves in New Hampshire, who stole 19 GMC Savanas in 2024.
Jeep Grand Cherokee
/images/2025/07/16/new-jeep-grand-cherokee-adobe.jpg)
States where the Jeep Grand Cherokee is the most stolen vehicle:
- Illinois (1,615 stolen)
- Michigan (1,507 stolen)
The Jeep Grand Cherokee offers a range of models and trim levels. Some Grand Cherokees have luxurious interiors that anyone would enjoy. Others were built to tackle difficult terrain.
Both of these options can appeal to thieves in Illinois and Michigan, especially as harsh winter weather conditions begin to set in. That could explain why 1,615 Jeep Grand Cherokees were stolen in Illinois and 1,507 were stolen in Michigan last year.
Toyota Camry
/images/2025/07/22/toyota_all-new_camry_hev_car.jpg)
State where the Toyota Camry is the most stolen vehicle:
- Alabama (219 stolen)
The Toyota Camry is an extremely popular vehicle. In 2024, Toyota sold about 310,000 of them in the U.S. It's not surprising, then, that it's also a common target for thieves. In fact, it's the ninth-most stolen car in the country, with 12,296 taken in 2024.
Despite its popularity at dealerships and chop shops, it's only the most-stolen vehicle in one state: Alabama, where 219 were taken in 2024.
Ford F-150 Series
/images/2025/07/22/ford_f-150.jpg)
States where the Ford F-150 Series is the most stolen vehicle:
- Mississippi (172 stolen)
- South Dakota (76 stolen)
- Montana (60 stolen)
- West Virginia (50 stolen)
- Idaho (37 stolen)
- Wyoming (19 stolen)
When you think of a pickup truck, some version of the Ford F-150 probably comes to mind. There's a lot of variety with the F-150 Series, though. Some of them sell for approximately $39,000, while others sell for around $85,000.
Some thieves might see this as a kind of lottery. When they grab an F-150, they don't know how much money they can get for it. With a little luck, they could rake in a significant chunk.
Kia Soul
/images/2025/07/22/car_in_the_parking_lot.jpg)
States where the Kia Soul is the most stolen vehicle:
- Hawaii (75 stolen)
In 2024, thieves stole 13,562 Kia Souls in the U.S. Although that sounds alarming, it represents a significant improvement compared to the 21,001 stolen in 2023.
What happened? Kia had well-known security issues that made its cars popular targets until the company released a software patch in 2024. Still, some thieves continued to target Kia models. In Hawaii, they stole 75.
Honda Civic
/images/2025/07/22/honda_civic_2017.jpg)
States where the Honda Civic is the most stolen vehicle:
- Oregon (435 stolen)
- Utah (120 stolen)
Honda sold about 223,000 Civics in 2024. With that many on the streets, it was inevitable that criminals would steal a lot of them. It's just a numbers game.
Plus, savvy thieves are aware that Civic replacement parts command a high price on the underground market.

States where the Honda Accord is the most stolen vehicle:
- New Jersey (755 stolen)
- South Carolina (331 stolen)
- Massachusetts (241 stolen)
- Rhode Island (60 stolen)
Honda Accords get stolen for the same reasons as the Civic: There are a lot of them out there, and chop shops pay well for parts.
Those reasons were good enough for the Accord to become the most-stolen vehicle in four states.
Chevrolet Silverado 1500
/images/2025/07/22/blue_2021_chevrolet_z71_silverado.jpg)
States where the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is the most stolen vehicle:
- Texas (6,453 stolen)
- California (6,248 stolen)
- New Mexico (335 stolen)
- Oklahoma (293 stolen)
- Arkansas (178 stolen)
- Iowa (93 stolen)
- Alaska (61 stolen)
- North Dakota (46 stolen)
- Maine (42 stolen)
Although not as powerful as the Ford F-150, the Silverado 1500 is still an impressive truck with a good tow rating. A thief who wants to go joyriding in the desert or mountains would love one of these.
Hyundai Sonata
/images/2025/02/10/hyundai-sonata.jpg)
State where the Hyundai Sonata is the most stolen vehicle:
- Kentucky (419)
Like many Kia models, the Hyundai Sonata had highly publicized security issues up until 2024. It corrected those problems, but thieves in Kentucky still took 419 Sonatas from their rightful owners.
Hyundai Elantra
