With a combined fuel economy of 13 mpg, this high-performance SUV is fun to drive but not fuel-efficient. According to the EPA, the Durango Hellcat costs $7.62 to travel 25 miles, and its annual fuel cost is $4,550. It’s also an old-school SUV. The manufacturer has discontinued just about every other vehicle that once used the same powertrain.

You may have been excited to discover that Ford refreshed the Expedition lineup this year. This large, family-friendly SUV offers a combined 17 mpg, making it a less efficient choice for those concerned with fuel costs. Your family may also not like the ride itself. Reviewers said the Expedition has truckish handling. In addition, some said it looks cheap inside.

2025 Nissan Armada

A full-size SUV with a combined 16 mpg, it’s another option for large families but falls short in fuel efficiency. You may find some other reasons not to buy this SUV. Reviewers said there’s an occasional jittery ride quality. Plus, the engine may be louder than you desire when idle, and you may not find the space inside as favorable as some competitors.

This luxury SUV offers a combined 15 mpg, highlighting its opulence but poor fuel economy. Per the EPA, this SUV's annual fuel cost is $3,950. The EPA based the number on the assumption of 15,000 miles of driving each year, with 45% done on the highway and 55% on city streets.

If you’re going to buy a Rolls-Royce, you might have a big enough bank account that you’re not too worried about fuel costs. Still, the Cullinan has a combined 14 mpg. Like some others on our list of SUVs with the worst fuel mileage, this one is heavy and big on power. Those are some of the main reasons this one comes with poor fuel economy.

2025 BMW X6 M Competition

Like the GLS600, this performance coupe SUV checks in at a combined 15 mpg. Based on EPA information, you’ll likely spend $11,500 more on fuel over five years than the average vehicle owner. That’s not all: Like many luxury vehicles with powerful engines, you’ll pay more for premium fuel.

This attention-grabbing ride has a combined 14 mpg. Its rugged boxy SUV styling is inspired by the Land Rover Defender, and it boasts a BMW engine. The poor fuel economy is likely due to several factors, including the boxy shape, which lacks aerodynamic qualities, and the weight of over 6,000 pounds.

2025 Cadillac Escalade-V

This supercharged SUV gets a combined 13 mpg. You might think of it as a luxury family ride with a muscle car feel under the hood. However, its power and weight make for poor fuel economy. The EPA estimated that the Escalade-V will likely cost you an extra $14,500 in fuel over five years compared to the average vehicle.
