The cost of food is on the rise. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the price of supermarket purchases jumped by 2.7% between July 2025 and July 2026. If inflation makes shopping on a budget challenging at best, we've got you covered with an easy way to save money on groceries. That's why we compared prices at two of the top chains: Walmart and Aldi.

Every dollar counts. And that makes a strategic shopping plan essential. Our roundup features popular products and everyday essentials that cost less at Walmart. From baking basics to coffee pods, here are 10 items to buy from the superstore.

Editor's note: Prices and availability are subject to change and may vary by location.

Great Value Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Price: $5.97

Extra virgin olive oil is a pantry staple that shouldn't break the bank. At Walmart and Aldi, it doesn't have to.

Unlike butter, EVOO is rich in healthy fats and antioxidants, making it a healthier cooking option. And bonus, this is a versatile product you can use to bake, roast, or sauté everything from fresh fish to veggies. You can also drizzle it over pasta, use it as a dipping sauce, or mix it into a homemade dressing.

Walmart sells 17 ounces of the generic store-brand Great Value Extra Virgin Olive Oil for $5.97. In comparison, Aldi's 16.9-ounce bottle of the retailer's private label line's Priano EVOO costs $6.55.

Great Value Pure Granulated Sugar

Price: $2.97

Sugar is more than just a baking basic. While you need the sweet stuff to whip up cookies, cakes, and pies, it's also an ingredient in marinades, sauces, dressings, brines, and more. But that's not all. You can add it to coffee, tea, and cocktails, making it a household essential.

We shopped Walmart for the best price on pure granulated sugar and found a four-pound bag from the superstore's Great Value exclusive brand for $2.97. Aldi sells four pounds of Baker's Corner Granulated Sugar for the temporary sale price of $3.09. The regular price of $3.19 adds an additional $0.10 to your overall cost.

Marketside Blueberry Struesel Muffins

Price: $3.98

Start your day in a tasty way. Pass on plain toast and pick up this four-pack of sweet streusel-topped muffins. Real blueberries make the breakfast buy a winner (along with the price, of course). Take it from Walmart shopper Julie, "I have never found a blueberry muffin so moist and delicious! It is perfect!"

Compare Walmart's $3.98 price for four to $4.29 for a similar item from Aldi's Bake Shop brand. While the superstore may seem like the obvious choice, this potentially temporary rollback deal may not last long. The full retail price for Walmart's four-pack is $4.46.

Great Value Whole Wheat Round Top Bread

Price: $2.02

Make sandwiches for less. Walmart's 100% whole wheat round top bread (20-ounce size) is a steal for $2.02. The low-priced loaf is fiber-rich and saturated fat-free. Use the budget-friendly baked good to make a healthier version of grilled cheese, avocado toast, or a ham-and-Swiss sammie.

What do shoppers think about this generic? Walmart customer Frankie raved, in a five-star review, "The value of the price is great too…You might be surprised by the quality and taste."

We searched Aldi's aisles for a similar whole grain item and found L'oven Fresh's 100% Whole Wheat Bread for $2.15. Like Walmart's loaf, you'll also get 20 ounces in the Aldi buy.

Great Value Purified Drinking Water

Price: $5.47

Stay hydrated on the go and nab this 40-count bulk buy from Walmart. The superstore's private-label 40-count of 16.9-ounce bottles is a bargain for $5.47. Aldi sells a nearly identical item (40-pack of 16.9-ounce bottles) from Puraqua for $5.49.

Even though the price difference is only two pennies, every cent counts. If this item is always on your weekly shopping list, the savings could add up over time.

Keep in mind that both of these generics are significantly better value than comparable brand-name bottled water. For reference, a smaller 32-pack from Dasani costs $5.98 at Walmart.

Great Value Frozen Broccoli Florets

Price: $1.16

Healthy meals are affordable at both of these grocery stores. While fresh veggies typically cost less at Aldi, the same isn't always true for the frozen alternative. Great Value's 12-ounce steamable bag of broccoli florets is a bargain for $1.16.

The Walmart freezer section find is free of added chemicals, sugars, and preservatives and contains only 30 calories per serving. Make a side in minutes and steam these veggies in the microwave or cook them on the stove.

How much does Aldi charge for a similar selection? The same size bag (12 ounces) of the store's Season's Choice Steamable Frozen Broccoli Florets costs $1.29.

Great Value Arabica Colombian Ground Coffee Pods

Price: $4.64

Why waste cash on overpriced brand names just to get a fancy package? Walmart and Aldi offer deals on high-quality K-Cup dupes. But the superstore's 12-pack of Great Value 100% Arabica Colombian Medium Dark Roast Coffee Pods is a better bargain than Aldi's version. The other store charges $5.05 for 12 Barissimo Colombian Coffee Cups.

Yes, the Walmart item is cheaper than Aldi's product. Even though the price is $0.41 lower at the big-box retailer, they're both less expensive than Green Mountain Coffee Roasters' Columbia Select Medium Roast Coffee pods. You'll pay $9.99 for a smaller 10-count on Keurig's website.

Great Value Homestyle Vanilla Flavored Ice Cream

Price: $2.97

Treat yourself without overspending on sweets. For $2.97, this delicious dessert is a frugal freezer find that costs less than Aldi's version. The other retailer sells its Sundae Shoppe brand Vanilla Bean Ice Cream for $3.25.

But there is one caveat: We found Aldi's ice cream on sale for $2.75, making it a better value than Walmart's generic product. Always scan the current circular or check the price online before you go to the store to score the best deal.

With the money you save at either chain, you'll have cash left over for a few toppings. Walmart's 24-ounce bottle of Great Value Chocolate Syrup costs $2.72. You'll pay slightly more for Aldi's Berryhill Chocolate Syrup ($2.85).

Great Value Frozen Beef Burgers

Price: $15.97

The cost of fresh ground beef doesn't have to put an end to backyard barbecues. Snap up this three-pound bag of frozen 100% pure 85/15 beef burgers for $15.97.

Not only is this Walmart buy a better deal than raw (refrigerated) meat, but it also costs less than what you would pay at Aldi. The other retailer charges $17.49 for three pounds of frozen 85/15 ground beef patties.

How do condiments compare at these stores? Walmart's Great Value Tomato Ketchup (24-ounce) costs $1.67. Aldi charges $2.35 for Simply Nature Organic Ketchup. If organic isn't on your must-have list, Walmart has the better deal.

Great Value Whole Grain Quick Oats

Price: $4.18

Make a quick, healthy, heart breakfast in about one minute. If plain cold cereal just won't cut it, this 42-ounce container of 100% whole grain quick oats will. With only 150 calories per serving, four grams of dietary fiber, and five grams of protein, this is also a nutritious alternative to pancakes, waffles, or buttery French toast.

Not a fan of plain oats? Jazz up your morning meal with fresh berries, a drizzle of maple syrup, and sliced bananas, or blend a spoonful of Greek yogurt into the mix.

Get this superstore deal for $4.18 right now. A comparable quick oat product costs $4.39 at Aldi, making Walmart the better value.

Bottom line

Erman Gunes/Adobe Close up of Walmart shopping cart handle inside store

Even though both Walmart and Aldi are known for affordable buys, the superstore often undercuts the other retailer on items like bread, muffins, olive oil, and ice cream. But that doesn't necessarily mean you'll pay less overall.

Keep in mind, Walmart's best values are typically on "rollbacks." But these sales won't last forever. An amazing value today could cost more tomorrow. Along with temporary promotions, both stores' regular prices routinely change.

Here's an easy way to avoid wasting money on a large haul: Take a "big picture" approach to your next shopping trip and split your list. Browse each chain's website or use a cost-comparison app to pick and choose budget-friendly items.
