Macy’s Permanently Closes 14 Stores (Is Yours One?)

Macy's closed 14 stores across 12 states in the first half of 2026, following 66 closures in 2025. Most of this year's locations shut their doors by the end of April after weeks of clearance sales. That was a rare opportunity for shoppers looking for easy ways to pocket more cash.

The closures are part of Macy's Bold New Chapter strategy, which shrinks the company's physical retail footprint so it can reinvest in its strongest stores and its digital business. Macy's describes the stores it closes as underproductive, and the approach seems to be working. Comparable sales rose 2.7% in the second quarter of 2026, and the company raised its full-year outlook in September.

These are the 14 Macy's stores that closed this year.

California

• La Mesa: 5500 Grossmont Center Dr.
• Tracy: 3400 Naglee Rd.

The Grossmont Center and West Valley Mall both lost their Macy's locations this year. They were the only two California stores on the 2026 closure list. Grossmont Center is in the middle of a multimillion-dollar renovation, and mall officials have said a later phase will bring a new tenant into the former Macy's space.

Georgia

• Atlanta: 4880 Briarcliff Rd. NE

The Macy's at Northlake Mall in Tucker closed on April 26, leaving the mall without an anchor store. "We first communicated directly with our Macy's colleagues at Northlake Mall and are supporting them through the transition, including transfer opportunities where available and severance and support where applicable," a spokesperson told Decaturish.

Maryland

• Glen Burnie: 7900 Ritchie Hwy.

Marley Station Mall lost one of its last remaining anchor stores when Macy's closed in April. Macy's stores still operating in Maryland include Annapolis, Bethesda, Bowie, Columbia, Frederick, Hyattsville, Towson, Waldorf, Wheaton, and White Marsh, according to the department store's website.

Michigan

• Grandville: 3850 Rivertown Pkwy

RiverTown Crossings lost its Macy's at the end of March. The closure left only nine Macy's department stores in the state.

Minnesota

• Saint Cloud: 4101 W Division St.

Crossroads Center Mall lost its Macy's anchor store in March. Before closing, the store held a liquidation sale with up to 70% off the lowest ticketed prices, and even sold fixtures such as shelves and display mannequins.

New Hampshire

• Newington: 50 Fox Run Rd.

The Mall at Fox Run didn't just lose its Macy's. It lost the whole mall. The property, which first opened in 1983, is being demolished to make way for a new commercial redevelopment, and demolition began in late May.

New Jersey

• Livingston: 112 Eisenhower Pkwy.
• Ramsey: 225 Interstate Shopping Center

The Livingston Mall and Interstate Shopping Center both lost their Macy's stores as part of the Bold New Chapter strategy. The Ramsey location was one of Macy's smaller-format stores. There are still 28 Macy's locations throughout New Jersey.

New York

• Amherst: 1255 Niagara Falls Blvd.

The Macy's in Boulevard Mall closed this spring, and a spokesperson said employees would be supported through the transition with transfer opportunities where available, along with severance packages. Local residents now have to travel to Walden Galleria in Cheektowaga to shop at Macy's in person, but not everybody is happy about that solution because the Galleria is much larger.

North Carolina

• Raleigh: 3801 Sumner Blvd.

The Macy's at Triangle Town Center closed on April 26 after a final clearance sale with merchandise marked down as much as 80%. The closure left only one Macy's in Raleigh, at Crabtree Valley Mall. The next nearest store is at The Streets at Southpoint in Durham, and locations are also open in Fayetteville and Greensboro.

Pennsylvania

• Tarentum: 100 Pittsburgh Mills Cir.

Macy's closed its store at Pittsburgh Mills in Frazer Township, Allegheny County, on April 26 after 21 years in business. Shoppers in the area can still visit nearby Macy's locations at Monroeville Mall, Ross Park Mall, South Hills Village, Mall at Robinson, and Westmoreland Mall.

Texas

• Corpus Christi: 5488 South Padre Island Dr.

Five Macy's locations in Texas closed in 2025, and this year added one more at La Palmera mall. The store closed in April following a large clearance sale.

Washington

• Tukwila: 17855 Southcenter Pkwy.

Macy's Furniture Clearance Center, also known as Budget House Furniture Clearance, was another casualty of the department store's shrinking national footprint. Macy's said the location would close in the first quarter of 2026, and it has since shut down. Two other Macy's locations in Tukwila, a full-line store and a furniture store, remain open.

Bottom line

Macy's Bold New Chapter strategy has three major aims: to strengthen the Macy's nameplate, accelerate luxury growth, and modernize end-to-end operations. When the plan was announced in 2024, it called for closing about 150 underproductive stores by the end of 2026.

Macy's has since stretched that timeline. The company still plans to close about 65 more stores, but now expects closures to continue through 2028. It hasn't said which locations are next, so it's worth keeping an eye on your local store.
