Macy’s Permanently Closing 14 Stores Despite Strong Holiday Sales

The "Bold New Chapter" strategy continues on pace.

Macy's closed 66 store locations in 2025 and is closing an additional 14 this year, despite seeing a surprisingly strong holiday season. Many retail establishments were bracing for low sales to finish out the year, because many consumers are struggling to bolster their financial fitness and afford basics during this time of continually rising prices.

Macy's strategy for navigating the economic turbulence is dubbed their Bold New Chapter and aims to make targeted adjustments to their physical retail footprint to reinvest in their digital capabilities. In short, they're betting on online shopping and closing even well-performing stores to maximize profits while reducing operating costs.

These 14 stores are headed to the chopping block this year.

California

La Mesa: 5500 Grossmont Center Dr.
Tracy: 3400 Naglee Rd.

The Grossmont Center and West Valley Mall are both slated to lose their Macy's locations this year, on top of the nine that were closed last year in the state. There are still about 78 remaining Macy's in California, though, so even if additional closures take place, it is going to be a while before the department store completely exits the market.

Georgia

Atlanta: 4880 Briarcliff Rd. NE

The Northlake Mall in Tucker is scheduled to shut down this year, although an exact date has yet to be announced. "We first communicated directly with our Macy's colleagues at Northlake Mall and are supporting them through the transition, including transfer opportunities where available and severance and support where applicable," a spokesperson confirmed to Decaturish.

Maryland

Glen Burnie: 7900 Ritchie Hwy.

Marley Station Mall is losing another anchor store, one of the few left in the shopping mall. Macy's stores still remaining in Maryland include Annapolis, Bethesda, Bowie, Columbia, Frederick, Hyattsville, Towson, Waldorf, Wheaton, and White Marsh, according to the department store's website.

Michigan

Grandville: 3850 Rivertown Pkwy

RiverTown Crossings lost its Macy's at the end of March, and the location is now permanently closed. That leaves only nine Macy's department store locations left in the state.

Minnesota

Saint Cloud: 4101 W Division St.

Crossroads Center Mall lost its Macy's anchor store in March, as the department store began a liquidation sale on a total inventory blowout that gave up to 70% off the lowest ticketed prices, and included fixtures such as shelves and display mannequins.

New Hampshire

Newington: 50 Fox Run Rd.

The Mall at Fox Run isn't just losing a Macy's. They're losing the whole mall. The property is slated for demolition to make way for a new commercial redevelopment, which is replacing the mall that first opened in 1983.

New Jersey

Livingston: 112 Eisenhower Pkwy.
Ramsey: 225 Interstate Shopping Center

The Livingston Mall and Interstate Shopping Center are both losing their Macy's department stores as part of the Bold New Chapter strategy, but there are still going to be 28 locations remaining throughout New Jersey for shoppers to enjoy.

New York

Amherst: 1255 Niagara Falls Blvd.

The Macy's in Boulevard Mall is closing, and a spokesperson communicated that the employees would be supported through the transition and offered transfer opportunities where available, along with severance packages. Local residents are now having to travel to Walden Galleria in Cheektowaga to shop at Macy's in person, but not everybody is happy about that solution because the Galleria is much larger.

North Carolina

Raleigh: 3801 Sumner Blvd.

The Macy's department store chain location at Triangle Town Center is included in the latest round of closures. No official date was given with the announcement, but the closure leaves only one Macy's in the Raleigh area, the one at Crabtree Valley Mall. The nearest Macy's is at The Streets at Southpoint in Durham, and locations could also be found in Fayetteville and Greensboro.

Pennsylvania

Tarentum: 100 Pittsburgh Mills Cir.

April 26 was announced as Macy's last day at the mall in Frazer Township, Allegheny County. The Pittsburgh Mills store closure allows Macy's to focus on improving other nearby locations, such as Monroeville Mall, Ross Park Mall, South Hills Village, Mall at Robinson, and Westmoreland Mall.

Texas

Corpus Christi: 5488 South Padre Island Dr.

Last year, five Macy's locations in Texas were permanently closed, and this year sees another one in the La Palmera Mall. No date has been announced for the department store's final day, but large clearance sales have been leading up to all the closing stores' final dates.

Washington

Tukwila: 17855 Southcenter Pkwy.

Macy's Furniture Clearance Center is another casualty of scaling back the department store chain's national footprint. It was initially announced that this location would be closing in the first quarter of 2026. However, the official website still lists the store as active but slated for closure.

Macy's Bold New Chapter strategy has three major aims: to strengthen Macy's nameplate, accelerate luxury growth, and modernize end-to-end operations. This shift in corporate strategy was first announced in 2024 and was planned to take place by the end of 2026.

That likely means Macy's hopes to halt closures by 2027, so this year could be customers' last chance to grab great closeout deals from shuttering locations.
