Mexican restaurant chains used to be an easy choice when you wanted a filling meal without spending a fortune. That has gotten harder recently, as prices have climbed, portions can be inconsistent, and some chains haven't kept their menus, restaurants, or overall experience up with what diners can get elsewhere.
Limited-service Mexican chains generated nearly $34 billion in U.S. sales in 2024, while full-service Mexican restaurants have struggled to keep up with fast-casual competition.
If you're trying to avoid wasting money, these seven Mexican chains are worth thinking twice about before you go.

Moe's Southwest Grill
Moe's has gotten noticeably more expensive, and some customers don't think the food has kept up. Recent reviews complain about bland food, smaller portions, and meals that cost more than expected.
That is a problem for a chain competing with Chipotle, QDOBA, local taquerias, and plenty of newer fast-casual Mexican restaurants. There are too many alternatives for customers to overlook a mediocre burrito or bowl.
The increasing complaints translate into the chain's shrinking footprint. Moe's had 681 restaurants in 2021 but was down to 568 at the beginning of 2026. One franchise operator, Quality Fresca, went from 69 Moe's restaurants to 38 before filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2026.
Rubio's Coastal Grill
Rubio's can be an expensive choice for a quick Mexican meal, particularly when the portion doesn't feel substantial. Customers have complained about paying more for smaller portions, including diners who share photos of tiny taco portions costing $16.
Fish tacos and burritos aren't difficult to find, and independent Mexican restaurants give customers another reason to skip the chain.
Rubio's has also lost a significant part of its footprint. The company closed 48 California restaurants in 2024 and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy for the second time since 2020. Reuters reported that the company had more than $100 million in debt.
Del Taco
Del Taco's prices have crept up enough that some customers are questioning what they're getting for the money. That's a bigger issue for a chain that built its reputation around cheap tacos, burritos, and combo meals.
The company has been trying to restore that appeal with value deals. Del Taco brought back a $1 menu in 2026 with more than 10 items, along with discounted meal bundles.
The push comes as sales have been heading in the wrong direction. Same-store sales fell 3.7% in 2025, and Del Taco finished the year with 576 restaurants, compared with 594 a year earlier. It opened 14 restaurants but closed 32.

Taco Cabana
Taco Cabana has a loyal following, but some longtime customers say the food and portions aren't what they used to be. Recent complaints mention smaller servings, declining food quality, and higher prices.
Taco Cabana has also been closing restaurants. Several San Antonio locations shut down in 2025 as the company prepared for a new franchising strategy. The chain was also facing lawsuits over unpaid rent in 2026.
On The Border
The chain was once known for big Tex-Mex meals, fajitas, guacamole, margaritas, and busy dining rooms. Some longtime customers now describe the restaurants as disappointing compared with what they remember.
The chain's financial problems show how serious the situation became. On The Border had about 120 restaurants in 2023. After closures and a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in 2025, that number dropped sharply. Pappas Restaurants bought the business out of bankruptcy, but it later closed the company-owned locations in 2026.
Tijuana Flats
Tijuana Flats is a very different chain from what it was a few years ago. The menu has changed, prices have gone up, and some longtime customers say the food no longer has the same quality or flavor they remember.
The chain also shrank significantly after years of declining sales and financial problems. Tijuana Flats had about 140 locations at its peak, but sales grew an average of just 0.1% annually in the five years through 2023, even as the broader fast-casual Mexican category expanded. The company filed for bankruptcy in 2024 and closed dozens of restaurants as part of its restructuring.
Baja Fresh
Baja Fresh used to be one of the biggest names in fast-casual Mexican food. The chain had 299 restaurants at its peak, but it has been shrinking ever since. Today, it has just 68 locations. Its average restaurant also brings in about $800,000 a year, compared with roughly $1.3 million when the chain was sold to Wendy's.
Baja Fresh lost ground as competitors like Chipotle invested heavily in expansion, marketing, and consistency while Baja Fresh struggled to keep up. Longtime fans have complained about changes to the chain's salsa bar following the pandemic.
Bottom line
A chain doesn't have to be failing for it to stop being a good value. Before you order, check recent reviews for the specific location, look at current menu prices, and pay attention to whether the restaurant is company-owned or franchised. A shrinking chain can also mean fewer choices if your local location closes.
If you want to go out to eat more, it makes sense to compare these chains with the independent Mexican restaurants around you before spending your money.
