$40,000 at 4.00% APY earns about $1,600 over one year, or roughly $133 a
month.
The same $40,000 at the FDIC national average savings rate of 0.38% APY (as
of 08/01/25) earns about $152 a year, or about $13 a month.
That leaves an annual gap of about $1,448 on savings you might not need for
upcoming bills.
At the national average savings rate of 0.38% (as of 06/15/26), $20,000 earns $76 a year. The same balance could earn up to ten times more with a SoFi account. See SoFi®'s current rate.
Maybe your checking account is boring in the best possible way. Your paycheck
lands, the rent or mortgage leaves, the card autopay works, and nobody has to
memorize a new routing number.
If you've got $40,000 in savings sitting beside that daily system, moving some
of it can sound like tearing up the whole setup. The useful version is much
narrower: a high-yield savings account can sit beside your existing checking
account.
The standard is simple: separate the cash that needs to stay close from the cash
that can earn more elsewhere. Same cards. Same bill calendar. A better job for
the savings that fits.
Moving savings doesn't have to touch the account you use every day. Your direct
deposit can keep landing in checking, your debit card can keep working, and your
credit card autopay can keep pulling from the same place it does now.
That matters because daily banking is where small mistakes get annoying fast.
Rent, mortgage payments, utilities, subscriptions, insurance drafts, and card
autopay all run on timing, and changing all of that for a better savings rate
would be a lot of disruption for one cash decision.
So keep that setup if it works. The question is whether every dollar of your
$40,000 needs to sit in checking, or whether some of that savings can move into
a separate high-yield savings account linked to checking.
We did the research for you.
Having your checking and savings accounts with the same financial institution can make money management a lot simpler. SoFi® was our 2026 award winner for Best Checking and Savings Combo because it delivers on interest and additional features.

What $40,000 could earn
Here's why the move could be worth a few account steps. Say you find a
high-yield savings account paying 4.00% APY, which is an achievable rate among
high-yield savings accounts right now. A $40,000 balance at 4.00% APY earns
about $1,600 over one year.
Savings rates are usually quoted as annual percentage yield, so the one-year
comparison is easier to follow when the balance stays put. Divide the roughly
$1,600 by 12 and you get about $133 a month.
For comparison, the same $40,000 at the FDIC national average savings rate of
0.38% APY (as of 08/01/25) earns about $152 over one year, or about $13 a month.
The difference is about $1,448 in one year.
Same $40,000, same bills, different parking spot for the part of your savings
that isn't needed to keep payments moving.

Move only money that fits
Before moving anything, look at the next 30 days of your checking account. Money
for rent, a mortgage payment, utilities, card autopay, loan payments, insurance,
subscriptions, and scheduled withdrawals belongs where those bills can reach it
without a scramble.
Then sort the rest of your $40,000 by job:
Keep this month's bill money in checking, especially if payments are already
scheduled.
Consider high-yield savings for emergency reserves you might need soon, but
not necessarily today.
Consider high-yield savings for near-term goals, such as a car repair fund,
tax money, a vacation fund, or cash set aside for the next few months.
Keep money for a closing or major purchase in the next few weeks wherever
the payment instructions require it.
Rethink money you don't expect to use for five years or more, because a
savings account could be too conservative for long-term growth.
That could mean moving all of the $40,000, part of it, or none of it right now.
The point is to match the account to the job, because bill money and savings
money don't need the same home.
Linking replaces switching banks
The practical step is usually linking accounts, not switching banks. Your
checking account can remain the hub where paychecks arrive and bills leave,
while a separate high-yield savings account holds the cash that has a little
more breathing room.
To link the accounts, you'll typically have to confirm ownership in the way the
provider requires. That might mean test deposits, another verification step, or
a secure sign-in flow.
Once the accounts are linked, transfers move money back and forth. That setup
lets you leave your debit card, direct deposit, bill pay, and autopay alone
while changing where suitable savings sits.
Savings is reachable, but it isn't the same as cash already sitting in checking.
External account transfers commonly take one to three business days, and
weekends, holidays, cutoff times, and account verification can affect when money
is actually available.
That timing matters when rent is due tomorrow, a credit card autopay hits Friday
morning, or you need to make a large purchase before a transfer clears. ACH
transactions can sometimes take several days to complete because of processing
and fraud-prevention precautions.
So before moving a large chunk of your $40,000, open your bill calendar and scan
the next 30 days. Leave enough in checking to cover scheduled payments, a
cushion for timing surprises, and any same-day cash needs you already know
about.
The sticking points are specific
The real questions are practical, and they deserve plain answers. A savings
account can be liquid enough for emergencies because you can transfer money out,
but it's less seamless than checking when the emergency involves a debit card
swipe right now.
Insurance is another box to check. FDIC deposit insurance covers $250,000 per
depositor, per FDIC-insured bank, for each account ownership category. NCUA
share insurance uses a standard share insurance amount of $250,000 per share
owner, per insured credit union, for each account ownership category.
Account terms deserve a close look, too. Check these before you move money:
Minimum opening deposit
Minimum balance needed to earn the stated APY
Monthly maintenance fee, if the account has one
Transfer options back to checking
Withdrawal policies and any limits on certain transaction types
How the institution communicates rate changes
Here's the tradeoff with high-yield savings: rates can move after your money
does, so you don't lock in the 4.00% APY example the way you would with a
fixed-rate product. If the rate drops, you can compare again and decide whether
the account still earns enough to justify keeping savings there.
Bottom line
Moving $40,000 in savings can be a targeted move, not a financial renovation.
Your checking account can keep handling paychecks, cards, autopay, rent,
utilities, and the rest of daily life.
For the part of your $40,000 that doesn't need to pay bills soon, a high-yield
savings account paying 4.00% APY earns about $1,600 over one year. Leaving that
same suitable savings in a low-earning place has a cost, and now you've got a
simple standard: keep daily money close, and give the rest a chance to earn
more.
Would You Spend Ten Minutes for $1,465?
That's roughly the year's difference on $40,000 between the national average and the up-to-4.00% rates available now. And ten minutes isn't a figure of speech. You just provide some information, like your name, address, Social Security number, and the account your deposit money's coming from. But rates are variable and follow the market, which is why the only number worth acting on is today's. Compare the current top accounts here.
