Skyrocketing prices
McDonald's rose to riches by catering to low- and middle-income households, but now their pricing is attracting high-income earners while its core customer base is priced out of the market. Menu staples have skyrocketed in price in less than ten years. The McChicken sandwich used to cost just a single dollar in 2018, but now it's more than $3 (over a 210% price increase).
Declining quality
Consumers might be more forgiving of the higher pricing if the quality didn't fall through the floor for McDonald's classic menu staples. It's not your imagination; that $1 McChicken really was more delicious.
Customers are complaining about the tiny size, the lack of crispiness, and wilted toppings. Big Macs, Quarter Pounders, and McNuggets are also the target of consumer complaints.
Health concerns
Fatty foods consumed regularly can actually damage insulin sensitivity, which leads to binge-eating, difficulty processing sugars, and increased hunger after a meal.

Foodborne illness
18,000 cases were pulled from McDonald's stores in 2024 because of E. Coli. The outbreak covered 14 different states and resulted in 104 reported infections, all because of the onions used on Quarter Pounders.
Approximately 10 million people have cases of foodborne illness each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the fragmented oversight system for food safety leaves rules and regulations in the hands of 15 different federal agencies with too much room for error in coordination.
Caloric intake
Calories aren't a bad thing; they are just a way of measuring energy, but taking in more than you need on a regular basis disrupts biological processes. McDonald's is notoriously high in calories, and a Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese meal delivers more than half of the average daily caloric needs.
Unsanitary conditions
McDonald's having strict sanitary guidelines and McDonald's enforcing those guidelines are two separate things, and with 45,000 locations, it comes down to the management at each location to ensure cleanliness and food safety. A study published in the journal Drinking Water found that 40% of fast food soda fountains contained bacteria associated with contamination, and that's just one of the many standard equipment pieces in every McDonald's.
Ingredient quality
McDonald's has a long history of unsavory ingredients, and consumers want high-quality ingredients with transparency about sourcing. They may not use the by-product known as "pink slime" anymore, but the fact that they did at all still doesn't sit well with the public.
Even the McRib is under fire from a lawsuit that alleges the fan-favorite is made from pork shoulder, heart, tripe, and scalded stomach instead of any meaningful amount of rib meat, and, indeed, the sandwich doesn't contain rib meat, although that doesn't mean it contains the alleged ingredients within the lawsuit.
McDonald's denies the ingredient claims; however, they do admit the meat mixture is a restructured pork patty made from lower-cost cuts that are combined with water, salt, and flavoring agents before being pressed into a rib-shape. They say that mixture does not contain heart, tripe, or scalded stomach.
Allergen sensitivities
Those with dietary restrictions know the chance for cross-contaminants is too high to enjoy McDonald's. Even the French fries aren't safe, and are now labeled as containing wheat and milk ingredients. Vegetarians were also unhappy to learn the fry oil is flavored with beef products, making them unsuitable for those avoiding meat and animal products.
Forever chemicals in the packaging
A 2022 study from Consumer Reports tested 100 packaging products from 24 restaurants and groceries, and the results from McDonald's found upsetting levels of PFAS in the packaging for French fries, cookies, McNuggets, and the Big Mac. These "forever chemicals" are linked to cancer risks, immune system issues, and liver damage, among other health concerns. Many states are adopting new regulations to protect consumers, and updated studies are needed.

McDonald's isn't uniquely evil in the capitalistic landscape of fast food, and the occasional visit isn't likely to cause harm, but moderation is key. This is even more paramount for older adults managing their sodium intake, blood sugar, and fixed budgets that require clever ways to afford to go out to eat more.
