In early 2024, Walmart made a commitment to "invest in America" by opening 150 stores and remodeling thousands more over the next five years.

These openings and updates were designed to "help us reach and serve even more customers" and would "create tens of thousands of jobs supporting these projects… in addition to the hundreds of jobs we'll bring to a community each time we open a new store," the retailer said

The company is continuing to work towards that pledge, with more than 650 remodels and 20 new stores slated for 2026 and early 2027.

Hoping a new location is coming to you so that you can save money on groceries? Here's everything we know about the upcoming openings.

Where will the new Walmarts be?

Walmart has not released a comprehensive list of all new store openings and planned remodels.

However, a combination of local reporting and information from the retailer itself has identified a handful of states where shoppers can expect to find new and updated locations soon. These include:

  • California
  • Connecticut
  • Florida
  • Georgia
  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • Michigan
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • North Carolina
  • Ohio
  • Pennsylvania
  • Texas

How to find out if a new Walmart is coming to your area

Ultimately, shoppers' best bet for discovering whether a new or updated Walmart is coming to their area is keeping an eye on the company's newsroom as well as local announcements. The company typically announces new stores and renovation projects as details become available, making local announcements an important source of information.

Shoppers can also check their city or county's news releases, local news coverage, and announcements from nearby Walmart locations. Searching for the store's city alongside terms such as "Walmart remodel," "Walmart renovation," or "Walmart Neighborhood Market" may help uncover project-specific updates.

Keep in mind that the national target of more than 650 remodels does not mean every store in a particular state or region will receive an upgrade.

What Walmart's store remodels will change

The planned remodels will go beyond basic cosmetic improvements.

The retailer says that customers can expect changes that will actually make shopping easier, like wider aisles, reconfigured layouts, better merchandise displays, expanded product assortments, and improved parking lots.

Additionally, the company is planning to invest in the connection between its physical stores and online shopping services.

New digital touchpoints will help customers access Walmart's broader online assortment while shopping in person, and larger pickup and delivery areas, including express delivery options, will accommodate customers who prefer ordering groceries and other products digitally.

Neighborhood Markets are getting their own upgrades

Walmart's Neighborhood Markets, its smaller, grocery-focused formats, will get their own upgrades.

These stores will get expanded deli and hot bar selections, improved lighting and fixtures, pharmacy delivery options, and upgraded areas for delivery orders.

The changes are intended to make Neighborhood Markets more convenient for quick grocery trips while also supporting the growing demand for digital orders.

Some of these Neighborhood Markets will also be a part of Walmart's rapid remodel program, meaning that instead of getting updates piecemeal over the course of several months, they will fully close for just four weeks during the facelift process. This is intended to be less disruptive to shoppers.

What to expect if your store is under construction

If your local Walmart is being remodeled, expect some changes to the shopping experience while crews work.

Depending on the project, aisles may be rearranged, merchandise may temporarily move to different sections, and some areas may be harder to access. Pickup and delivery services may also be affected by construction.

For stores participating in the rapid remodel program, the temporary closure of the main sales floor could require customers to shop at another nearby location for several weeks.

Ultimately, the extent of any disruption will depend on the store's renovation plan.

Shoppers should check local announcements and the Walmart app for updates before making a trip, particularly if they rely on a specific pharmacy, pickup area, or department.

Bottom line

With more than 5,200 stores in the U.S., Walmart has a location within 10 miles of 90% of the population. So major upgrade and opening announcements like this can have a sizeable impact on a huge number of shoppers.

Things like wider aisles and more integrated shopping experiences can turn that weekly grocery run from a chore into a much more enjoyable experience.

If your local store isn't slated to get upgrades just yet, there's no need to worry. Walmart's current pledge runs through 2029, meaning there's plenty of time for your area to get the refreshed shopping experience.

FAQs

Will every remodeled Walmart get the same upgrades?

Not necessarily. Walmart has outlined improvements such as wider aisles, updated displays, and expanded pickup areas, but the changes will depend on each location's renovation plan. Check your store's announcements to see which upgrades are coming.

Will I still be able to use the pharmacy during a remodel?

Pharmacy access will depend on the store's construction plans. Before heading out, contact the pharmacy directly to confirm its hours, entrance, and prescription pickup options, especially if your location has announced a temporary closure.

Does a Walmart remodel mean the store will get bigger?

Not necessarily. A remodel can improve the existing space by rearranging departments, updating fixtures, or changing how merchandise is displayed. An updated store layout does not automatically mean the building itself will expand.
