The verdict is in: quality might not be their recipe.

Every day, over 32,000 people arrive at Wendy's asking, "Where's the beef?" The classic fast food chain has been serving hamburgers, chili, and its iconic Frosty milkshakes for nearly 60 years, and while it's a household name across the country, its reputation has recently been declining.

According to the American Customer Satisfaction Index, it ranks #20 out of the top 20 fast food chains among U.S. diners. Making the top 20 is good news, but coming in last certainly isn't. Recently, Wendy's has been seeing declining sales, shuttering stores, and struggling to meet their numbers across franchises.

That downward spiral is being felt in their restaurants, and here are good reasons to choose other fast food chains over Wendy's currently.

Rising prices

Ordering fast food used to mean paying a couple bucks for a quick meal. But now, you might find yourself paying the same amount for a parking lot sandwich as you would for an entree at a casual sit-down restaurant.

And Wendy's isn't immune to this rapid rise in prices. Some people are taking to social media to complain. $16 for a burger and fries? That's too much for consumers used to affordable fast food.

Cost-cutting measures

While customers care about the conditions at the restaurant, the prices they're paying, and the taste of the food, there's bad news happening behind the scenes, too. The CEO admits that they've implemented cost-cutting measures in recent years as their earnings have plummeted.

They tried to be more efficient with their spending, and that led to issues across the board in quality. Now they're trying to reverse course and improve food quality, store experience, value, and more.

Declining food quality

Apparently, quality wasn't their recipe. The Wendy's CEO recently admitted that they had sacrificed food quality in recent years. Rather than invest in high-quality ingredients that could have made them more competitive with other burger chains like McDonald's and Burger King, they focused on cheap food and enticing discounts. It didn't work — Wendy's recently slid behind both McDonald's and Burger King in the fast food rankings.

The one place they haven't given up quality? Their beef is still fresh, never frozen.

Unhealthy options

There are many lists a fast food restaurant might want to find themselves at the top of — favorite fast food, best quality fast food, and so on. One list that they wouldn't want to top? Unhealthiest fast food. And that's exactly where Wendy's finds themselves — right at number one.

Many of their meals have more calories in one sitting than many people try to consume in a day. If you order a Triple Baconator, get ready to eat over 2,100 calories and 54 grams of saturated fat. For context, your daily saturated fat shouldn't top 22 grams at the very highest.

Smaller portions

While some Wendy's meals are packing a massive caloric punch, others appear to be shrinking. Wendy's chicken nuggets are smaller than they've ever been before — some customers report that they're the size of a quarter. Yet the price is exactly the same.

Hopefully this is all related to the cost-cutting measures that the company is reversing, because nobody wants to pay the same price for less product, particularly when they're hungry.

Slow service

The entire point of a fast food restaurant is to be fast. Customers don't want to wait in the drive-thru for the same amount of time it would take to get a meal at a sit-down restaurant. But unfortunately, Wendy's hasn't gotten that memo.

Their drive-thru is notoriously slow, and it's actually gotten 20% slower just in the last seven years. They also have the lowest accuracy score among fast food restaurants. A whopping 21% of orders through the drive-thru are incorrect…and are customers willing to risk their Frosty not making it into the car? Or missing their fries?

Dirty restaurants

Slow service can throw off your day. An incorrect order is absolutely an annoyance. A too-small chicken nugget is going to leave you hungry. But a dirty restaurant? That's another level.

And unfortunately, Wendy's is known as one of the dirtiest restaurant chains in the United States. Locations across the United States have come under fire for health code violations, including insects, moldy food, raw food cross-contamination, and a laundry list of other dirty complaints.

Food poisoning lawsuits

Recently, Wendy's was hit with a lawsuit from a woman who claims a burger landed her in the hospital (twice!) due to contracting a dangerous bacteria called Campylobacteriosis. The suit hasn't been settled, but it's not a good look for Wendy's, particularly since she claims it was their negligence that allowed this bacteria to be present in her food.

It's not the first time Wendy's has faced a food poisoning lawsuit. There was one filed when Wendy's food led to 97 cases of E. Coli in 2022, and another outbreak back in 2006.

Bottom line

Grabbing a quick bite at Wendy's has always been a matter of convenience, not health. But as the prices go up and the quality goes down, this is no longer the best place to dine when you're looking to stretch your fast food budget and eat good food.

Can you still get a decent meal at Wendy's? Absolutely. But it's worth looking into the nutrition info, checking reviews of specific locations if you have time, and tempering your expectations before you order.
