- A savings account can look completely fine (balance climbing a little every month, no fees, no red flags) while paying next to nothing in interest.
- Running the actual math on one balance and one rate, for one year, is often what turns a vague feeling into a number you can't unsee.
- The gap between fine and optimized is easy enough to fix. The real cost is the years spent not looking.
- At the national average savings rate of 0.38% (as of 06/15/26), $20,000 earns $76 a year. The same balance could earn up to nine times more with a SoFi Checking and Savings account. See SoFi®'s current rate.
My savings account looked fine. The balance had been climbing slowly but steadily for years, and money was coming in and out on schedule. Every so often, I'd glance at the total and feel relieved. Everything was on track: no fees, no drama, and no reason to open the account details.
Then I saw an ad for a bank paying a 3.75% APY, and I wondered what mine was earning. It dawned on me that I'd never once looked. I opened my statement expecting some forgettable number and found 0.01%, which came to $2.50 a year on my $25,000 balance. At 3.75%, the same money would've made $937.50, a $935 difference.
What I assumed vs. what the statement said
If you'd asked me what my savings account paid before I saw that ad, I would have answered "something." I hadn't expected a great rate, but something reasonable. Since my account had been growing, it must have been doing its job, right? Wrong.
I had never looked at my rate. It was available on my statement and in the app, but I never bothered because I didn't have a reason to. When I finally saw the 0.01%, I wondered whether this low number even counted as interest. That's the same rate many of the country's largest banks pay their standard savings customers by default, and it works out to about a dollar a year on every $10,000 sitting in the account.
Doing the math
My balance at the time was $25,000. At 0.01%, it was earning me $2.50 a year, or less than a single vending machine snack. I moved the balance into a high-yield savings account paying 3.75% APY. At that rate, the same $25,000 earns $937.50 a year. Rates on these accounts are variable and can change, so the number moves with the market. That's a difference of $935 on a balance I was just sitting on without a second thought.
Here's what the same gap looks like on other balances.
| Balance | My old rate (0.01%) | High-yield (3.75%) | Annual difference |
| $5,000 | $0.50 | $187.50 | $187 |
| $10,000 | $1 | $375 | $374 |
| $20,000 | $2 | $750 | $748 |
| $50,000 | $5 | $1,875 | $1,870 |
That difference column is the whole story.
Why "fine" was the problem
The problem was that nothing prompted me to check. I had no fee to complain about, no bounced payment, and no customer service prompt to call it out. The balance kept growing, albeit slowly. Slow growth usually reads as "working" even when it's working badly.
Looking back, the only thing that would have made me look sooner was external. Left to my own devices, I had no internal trigger to check the rate on an account that wasn't causing any problems. We're quick to look into the parts of our finances that annoy us, and slow to look at the ones that run quietly. An account that never raises an alarm doesn't get reviewed.

What I did about it
Fixing the problem was a breeze. I opened a high-yield savings account online, verified my identity, and transferred the balance over in one sitting. It took 10 minutes. Once my balance transferred, my new balance was earning a 3.75% APY.
If you're about to do the same thing, my only caution is to check your old account for recurring transfers and linked overdraft protections before you close it. Otherwise, there's nothing to prepare for. Your money is just as safe, accessible, and easy to manage as before.
Bottom line
I went from earning $2.50 a year on my savings to earning $937.50. That's a $935 difference that cost me 10 minutes to claim.
There was nothing wrong with my old account. I just never checked it. If your savings account has been "fine" for years, this is your prompt to look up the rate and run the numbers.
FAQs
How do I find out my savings account's interest rate?
Check the your account details in your banking app or your most recent monthly statement, where it's usually listed as "interest rate" or "APY" near the account summary. A quick call to your bank's customer service line may also get you the number.
How much interest should a savings account earn?
The national average savings account rate is under 1% (0.38% as of 06/15/26), while the top high-yield savings accounts pay around 4%.
Is it worth switching banks for a higher rate?
Yes, it often can be. For many savers, the switch costs nothing but a bit of time. If your balance and rate difference produce a number you're unhappy with, the effort to move it is usually far smaller than the annual gain.
Would You Spend Ten Minutes for $1,465?
That's roughly the year's difference on $40,000 between the national average and the up-to-4.00% rates available now. And ten minutes isn't a figure of speech. You just provide some information, like your name, address, Social Security number, and the account your deposit money's coming from. But rates are variable and follow the market, which is why the only number worth acting on is today's. Compare the current top accounts here.
