- If your money is in a traditional savings account, you might be leaving easy money on the table. I was leaving almost $600 each year.
- Moving your funds might feel like a bit of a chore, but it's likely worth the effort (and easier than you think).
- You don't need to get the highest APY on the market to make the move worthwhile.
- At the national average savings rate of 0.38% (as of 06/15/26), $20,000 earns $76 a year. The same balance could earn up to nine times more with a SoFi Checking and Savings account. See SoFi®'s current rate.
When I started getting my personal finances in order, I realized that I should probably move my emergency savings into a high-yield savings account (HYSA). Although I knew I should move the money, it took me years to finally get around to that 10-minute chore.
After finally moving the money, I couldn't help but look back. I opened that account as a kid, when my parents walked me into the local branch to deposit my birthday money. Years later, my emergency savings were still sitting there collecting dust, and I quickly realized how much I had lost.
I made the switch around two years ago. In the last year, my new savings account paid me over $600 on $20,000 of my savings. That's more than my old account, which offered only 0.01% APY and earned about $2 a year. Leaving $20,000 in my old account cost me almost $600 per year.
Why I didn't move it sooner
When I saw those funds hitting my bank account after the switch, I was kicking myself for not tackling this to-do sooner. I'm not exactly sure why, but moving my funds into a brand-new savings account felt like an insurmountable chore that could consume my entire weekend.
At first, I thought I'd need to close down my old account. Unfortunately, my old bank makes closing down the account a real chore. Since it involved a visit to the bank during business hours, I kept putting it off.
And I kept making excuses for why I might need my old account. I liked having a branch nearby, I had the account since I was a kid, it was easy to get foreign currency when going on a trip, and all of my direct deposits were already set up with this bank.
Eventually I read the fine print of my old account. It turned out that I could leave it open without a monthly fee if I left a nominal sum in the account. So, I decided to do exactly that. I left around $100 in the old savings account and moved ahead with opening my HYSA.
And spoiler alert: That $100 is still sitting in my old bank account. I still haven't mustered up the resolve to march down to the bank and close the account. You might be disappointed in me. But I'm happy that at least the bulk of my savings is earning real dollars in interest payments. It's still on my to-do list to finalize closing my old savings account. And, truthfully, it might stay there for a long time.
| If you have | One year at 0.38% APY (national average) | One year at 3.80% APY (example) | You are leaving behind |
| $10,000 | $38 | $380 | $342 |
| $25,000 | $95 | $950 | $855 |
| $40,000 | $152 | $1,520 | $1,368 |

| $100,000 | $380 | $3,800 | $3,420 |
What I got wrong about online banks
I've interacted with my new bank entirely online. And it's surprisingly easy to manage.
When I made the switch, it took me around 10 minutes. After building up this task in my head for years, I couldn't believe how easy it was to move the money.
The account also has some handy features I didn't have with my old account. I especially like the ability to create separate accounts and name each to reflect the savings category. My emergency fund, travel fund, and miscellaneous savings all earn interest to help reach those goals.
Having your checking and savings accounts with the same financial institution can make money management a lot simpler. SoFi® was our 2026 award winner for Best Checking and Savings Combo because it delivers on interest and additional features.

How to move it
Ready to jump into a high-yield savings account? Use the following steps as a guide:
- Research new account options: Start by exploring your options for a new bank account. Find an HYSA that offers an interest rate you like from a financial institution you can trust.
- Open the new account: You'll need to share some personal details to open your new account. Be prepared to share your Social Security number, address, contact information, and more.
- Move the bulk of the funds: You can move most of the funds via an online transfer or check deposit.
- Leave a buffer: If possible, leave a buffer in your old account, at least temporarily. This will give you some time to catch potential issues, like a forgotten subscription payment that runs through your old account. When you're ready, you can close your old account.
- Check the rate periodically. Interest rates fluctuate over time. Check your new HYSA's rate once a quarter or so to make sure you're still comfortable with the rate.
Bottom line
Completing this 10-minute chore allowed me to rake in over $600 in one year. I'm happy I made the switch and wish I had done it sooner.
Since moving over my savings account, I've also opened a checking account with my new bank. It also offers an APY on my checking balance, which is more than my old bank offered. I figured I might as well set up my accounts to earn as much interest as possible because every little bit helps.
