- Moving my savings to a high-yield savings account helped me create a small income stream with minimal effort.
- My HYSA earns more than I expected, and it doesn't even offer the highest APY on the market.
- I regret not making this move earlier.
- At the national average savings rate of 0.38% (as of 06/15/26), $20,000 earns $76 a year. The same balance could earn up to nine times more with a SoFi Checking and Savings account. See SoFi®'s current rate.
I'd been a regular saver for years before I opened a high-yield savings account (HYSA). My emergency fund sat in a standard savings account the whole time, simply because that's where my parents had helped me set up my first bank account as a child.
After putting off the chore for an embarrassingly long time, I finally moved $20,000 of my savings into an HYSA. Part of the reason I waited is that I didn't think it would add much to my bottom line. A year later, that account has earned me more than $600, and that isn't even the best rate on the market.
The parts that were better than I expected
After opening an HYSA, I quickly realized this was one of the best financial to-dos I'd ever tackled.
For starters, it's such a wonderful feeling to log into my account at the end of each month and see my savings grow. And it grows whether or not I add any more savings to the pot. The interest earnings have added up much faster than I ever thought possible.
Of course, I had run the numbers with a simple calculator before making the switch. But seeing the projected earnings isn't the same as seeing the actual earnings land in your bank account.
The application itself was the easy part. It literally just took me a few minutes to set everything up. As I mentioned before, I left this to-do undone for a long time. If I had done this years ago, I could have been enjoying the interest earnings that whole time. After seeing how easy it was, I was kicking myself for not doing it sooner.
One of my hesitations about this type of account was the potential for paying taxes on the funds. And while I do have to pay taxes on the interest earnings, it's not that complicated. My bank sends me a 1099-INT in January, which I pass on to my accountant without any extra stress.
And last but not least, I thought this was an all-or-nothing decision. I assumed opening an HYSA meant closing my old account. It doesn't. I kept the old one open with a nominal balance to avoid its monthly fee, and I still haven't gotten around to closing it. I'm not sure I ever will.

What nobody told me
When I signed up, I vaguely understood that interest rates change over time. What I didn't realize is that the rate on my account could change without any warning at all.
That isn't my bank being sneaky. Banks have to give you 30 days' notice before changing a term that lowers your yield, but variable-rate changes are specifically exempt from that rule. Savings account rates are variable, so no notice is required. I have to check the current APY myself to see whether it's moved. So far, it's only moved down.
| If you have | One year at 0.38% APY (national average) | One year at 3.80% APY (example) | You are leaving behind |
| $10,000 | $38 | $380 | $342 |
| $25,000 | $95 | $950 | $855 |
| $40,000 | $152 | $1,520 | $1,368 |
| $50,000 | $190 | $1,900 | $1,710 |
| $100,000 | $380 | $3,800 | $3,420 |
How I'd set it up on day one
If I were still staring at this task on my to-do list, here's how I'd open an HYSA today:
- Research account options: I'd start by looking at the available HYSAs to find one that offers a great rate from a financial institution I can trust.
- Open the account: The application is short. Mine took a few minutes.
- Move most of the funds: I'd move most of the funds to the new account via an online transfer. Check deposit is also an option.
- Leave a buffer: I wouldn't clear out my old account completely. Instead, I'd leave some money there to cover any potential issues, like a forgotten subscription payment.
- Keep an eye on the rate: As I mentioned, the interest rate attached to your HYSA can change. Make sure you're still comfortable with the rate over time. If not, move your funds.
Bottom line
Watching my savings earn real money has boosted my financial confidence. It's basically another small income stream. It isn't going to replace my day job, but every little bit helps, and I'm glad I finally opened an HYSA.
FAQs
Can a high-yield savings account rate go down?
Yes, the interest rate attached to a high-yield savings account can rise and fall over time.
Do I pay taxes on high-yield savings interest?
Yes. Interest is taxed as ordinary income at your normal tax rate, not the lower rates that apply to capital gains. If you earn $10 or more in interest, your bank sends you a Form 1099-INT by January 31 for the prior tax year
How often does a high-yield savings account pay interest?
It depends. But you'll often receive the interest earnings on a monthly basis.
Would You Spend Ten Minutes for $1,465?
That's roughly the year's difference on $40,000 between the national average and the up-to-4.00% rates available now. And ten minutes isn't a figure of speech. You just provide some information, like your name, address, Social Security number, and the account your deposit money's coming from. But rates are variable and follow the market, which is why the only number worth acting on is today's. Compare the current top accounts here.
