Fact checked

While many drivers get caught going over the speed limit, it's one of the foolish ways to waste money, as fines can be pretty costly. Even going 15 mph over the speed limit can lead to triple-digit fines, on top of points on your record or, worse, causing a serious accident.

Thanks to automated speed enforcement programs that have emerged around the country (New York City's has been considered a win), you might not even know you've been nabbed until your ticket arrives in the mail. The costs of speeding tickets vary per state and conditions, but each one may put a damper on your wallet. Some cost up to several hundred dollars, the price climbing with your speed.

We've put together a list of the top 13 states with the most expensive speeding tickets for going 15 mph over the limit, including fees for most.

Bottom line

Whether you're a resident or visitor, it's crucial to stay within the mandated speed limit. A speeding ticket won't help you secure the best car insurance rates either. Furthermore, the cost of your life, or someone else's life, is not worth putting the pedal to the metal.

While the exact rate increase for a 15 mph speeding ticket varies per state, the average is about 10% to 30%. In addition to your state, the increase could depend on your insurance company and driving history. The best way to save money on fines and rates is to avoid speeding altogether.
