When you think of a discount goods store, you probably think of T.J. Maxx. The chain is known for carrying cheap name-brand items, marked-down home decor, and more.
While shopping at stores like TJ Maxx can be a smart way to save money, customers in recent years have had more than a few complaints about the way the stores are run, including the chosen inventory and organization.
Here are 10 reasons shoppers no longer love to shop at TJ Maxx.

Lost the high-end home decor feel
According to some customers, back in the day, T.J. Maxx used to be a goldmine for unique and discounted items. Now, the products tend to feel cheap and generic.
Reddit user Dreamingabouteight reports: "The bowls, platters, and dishes no longer have an 'art piece' feel. The 'World market' vibe is gone. Same with the Christmas decor."
Knockoffs instead of name brands
Instead of the heavily discounted name-brand items that it was known for selling, the chain now seems to offer generic brands.
Reddit Secure-Letterhead-58 wrote, "I always bought my perfumes there. TF, Chanel, etc. Now it's all knockoffs with wannabe names like Dark Orchid, Lady Paris, Rouge Nights."
Another user adds: "Before the pandemic, I used to buy something once a week. Stuff like ties, belts, hats, hoodies, etc... Lots of name brand stuff... Usually half off. Since the pandemic, these brands have disappeared entirely."
Pricier than other chains
While most shoppers assume they are always getting a better deal at a T.J. Maxx, this is not always the case. It's worth double-checking the prices online on your phone.
One Redditor complained about the recent change in inventory, writing: "even with the post-Christmas clearance the prices are more expensive then all other retailers for the same items."
Disorganized
As with most discount stores like TJ Maxx, the interior can get a bit chaotic and messy as the inventory is typically always changing. However, this means it can get quite disorganized and hard to browse.
"My pet peeve with TJM and Marshalls is their makeup dept," wrote user livluv10941. "Always gross, unkept and it's really sad."
Lacking inventory
While an ever-changing inventory is typical for a discount store, customers have been complaining about the lack of quality products at their local stores.
One customer wrote, "The racks at my local store have been empty of anything worth having for months now. We used to go in weekly and easily spend at least $100 and now we hardly purchase."
Dwindling furniture section
Some of the most popular sections of T.J. Maxx, the furniture and home goods aisles, have dropped in quality and quantity over the past few years.
"The home goods side used to be fun to go through", wrote Redditos Prestigious_Fail3791. "Now prices are higher than Walmart/Target/Samsclub. All of their furniture is either one of a kind or damaged in some way. It's also severely overpriced."
Expired food
While you might not think to check the expiration date on the dried foods section at T.J. Maxx, it turns out it might be a good thing to scope out before making a purchase.
Reddit user Advanced-Act4357 wrote, "Make sure to check the date because sometimes expired food goes unnoticed on the shelves. Also, make sure it's sealed because I've seen way too many people open and sample food and put it back.
Poor quality clothing
A few dollars may sound like a good deal for a piece of clothing, but turns out that lately, the quality of the products has been matching the low price.
"[The clothes] tend to not wash well," wrote one Reddit user. "I got one wear out of them and that was it. I think with the particular shirts I had, the material was too thin and the wash ruined it. Be mindful of what material you're buying for 9.99!"
Poor clothing and jewelry sanitation
Be aware the next time you wear a new piece of clothing or jewelry you got at T.J. Maxx. The chances of it having been on the floor, or worn and returned by another customer are high.
Another shopper said, "I can't understand the lack of imagination in these people - I can almost always determine if I like a pair of earrings by holding them up to my ear. There's no need to try most of them on at the store."
Get a protection plan on all your appliances
Did you know if your air conditioner stops working, your homeowner’s insurance won’t cover it? Same with plumbing, electrical issues, appliances, and more.
Whether or not you’re a new homeowner, a home warranty from Choice Home Warranty could pick up the slack where insurance falls short and protect you against surprise expenses. If a covered system in your home breaks, you can call their hotline 24/7 to get it repaired.
For a limited time, you can get your first month free with a Single Payment home warranty plan.
Product tampering
Another big complaint for T.J. Maxx shoppers is the usage of sealed products in the makeup and beauty sections.
Reddit user wafflefluff5899, who works at a T.J. Maxx, wrote: "The biggest problem at my store with keeping beauty safe is the customers testing SEALED products on their bare skin or even using lipstick on their lips and then putting it back."
Bottom line
Sure, browsing the food sections at TJ Maxx may help you tackle high grocery costs, but you want to make sure you always check the expiration date. You might catch a glimpse of a name-brand item, but chances are it's probably just as expensive as the name-brand itself.
From clear product tampering to poor quality products, there are many reasons why customers are starting to lose faith in their once-beloved TJ Maxx.
