Trucks offer loads of versatility and open the door to a whole other outdoor-focused lifestyle, from going off-roading to hauling boats for a weekend on the lake.
Buying used can keep more cash in your wallet, but spending less cash on your purchase doesn't mean much when you end up paying for endless repairs. That's why you need a used truck that holds up well over time, no matter how many miles it travels.
We've put together the following list to help you focus on trucks that can go the long haul.

Chevrolet Silverado 1500 (2014-2018)

The Silverado is the top-selling vehicle from General Motors. It doesn't take long to see why.
You can buy a 2014 Silverado 1500 for about $15,990 starting. Even at that low price, the truck comes with a 4.3-liter V6 with 285 hp and 305 lb-ft of torque. If you want more power, look for a Silverado 1500 LTZ. Its V8 engine gives you 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque.
Toyota Tacoma (2005-2015)
/images/2025/07/24/toyota_tacoma_4x4_black_car.jpg)
The Toyota Tacoma has plenty to offer if you're interested in a midsize truck. Its 4-liter V6 engine option is surprisingly quick. Plus, some versions of the Tacoma can tow up to 6,500 pounds.
Expect to pay $15,999 to $33,590 for a 2015 Tacoma. Not surprisingly, the higher-priced trims will give you punchier performance. The TRD Off-Road can even handle serious off-road driving without any problems.
GMC Sierra 1500 (2007-2013)

The GMC Sierra 1500 is a top option for anyone who wants a high-performing truck at a budget price. For 2013 models, the range is $5,572 to $7,562, and you get a 6.2-liter V8 engine that produces 403 hp and 417 lb-ft of torque.
This full-size pickup truck offers an impressively smooth ride, easy handling, and comfortable seats. There aren't a lot of trucks you'd want to drive for work and vacation, but this is one of them.

Nissan Frontier (2005-2021)

Nissan didn't make any considerable updates to the 2005 Frontier until 2022, so you might as well save some money and look for an older model in good shape.
Don't let the idea of owning a 2005 compact truck get you down, though. For $2,080 to $3,235, you get a 4-liter V6 capable of 265 hp and 284 lb-ft of torque. You can also choose a stick shift, which has become increasingly hard to find in recent years.
Ford Ranger (1998-2011)

The third-generation Ford Ranger might look a bit today to modern shoppers, but it stands out as an impressive compact truck that you can still see on the road.
The Ranger's smaller size makes it more maneuverable than most of the bigger trucks manufactured today. Granted, you won't get mind-blowing speed or power from the Ranger. However, if you miss driving a stick shift, you'll appreciate that it came standard until 2011. The price estimate for a 2011 Ranger is $4,935 to $6,951.
Chevrolet Colorado (2015-2022)

This Chevrolet Colorado is more recent than the other trucks on this list. That means you'll spend more money on it. It also means you can take advantage of updated technology, including automatic climate control and a highly responsive touchscreen interface.
Plus, the Colorado can haul an impressive amount of weight. With the V6, you can pull 7,000 pounds. The diesel version can handle 7,700 pounds. The 2022 Colorado's estimated price range is $23,590 to $42,998.
Ford F-250 Super Duty (2008-2010)
/images/2025/07/24/ford_f-250_xl_super_duty.jpg)
Ford wasn't kidding when it named this truck the Super Duty. Still, the second generation has several trim levels and engines. Some are a little better than others.
If you want power, look for an F-250 Super Duty with a 6.4-liter PowerStroke turbodiesel. It churns out 350 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque.
The 2010 F-250 Super Duty sells for about $5,450, so you get a lot of power for your money.
Ford F-150 (2009-2014)
/images/2025/07/24/ford_f-150_display.jpg)
The 12th generation of the Ford F-150 is a full-sized pickup truck with several engines to consider.
The EcoBoost 3.5-liter V6 stands out as a great option because it offers excellent power (365 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque) and consumes the least fuel of any F-150 engine (17 mpg combined with 4WD and 18 mpg with 2WD).
Bottom line
/images/2022/09/15/trucks_on_a_used_car_lot.jpg)
Considering pickup truck sales hit an all-time high in 2024, you should start to see even more used options over the next few years. Some trucks tend to last longer than others. Just because you find a vehicle on this list, though, doesn't mean that it will go the long haul with you.
You also need to make sure the previous owner took care of it. Without regular maintenance, even the best vehicle will fail before its time. Bring along your checklist when shopping to get all the details before you fork over any money. While you're at it, it may be wise to look for ways to save on car insurance to maximize your savings even further.
