If you are trying to get ahead financially in retirement, new data from Fidelity just gave you a solid benchmark to measure yourself against. The average 401(k) balance reached $155,800 in the second quarter of 2026, an all-time high and the largest quarterly jump since late 2020.
That is a 10.5% increase from the previous quarter and 13.1% higher than a year ago, according to Fidelity's Q2 2026 retirement analysis, which covers more than 25.8 million participants across 27,300 plans.
Before you compare your own balance to that number, there are a few things worth understanding.

What drove balances to a record high
Two forces combined to push balances to new territory: a strong market rebound and disciplined saving behavior.
Markets fell sharply in Q1 2026 following the Iran conflict, then rebounded strongly in the second quarter. That recovery did a lot of the heavy lifting on the average balance.
But savings behavior also played a meaningful role. The combined employee and employer 401(k) savings rate held at a record 14.4% for the second consecutive quarter, just below Fidelity's recommended 15% annual benchmark.
More than eight in ten participants, 81.2%, saved enough to capture their employer's full matching contribution. That is significant, because the employer match is effectively free money that directly lifts your balance at no extra cost.
How balances break down by generation
The $155,800 average covers everyone from 22-year-olds just starting out to workers in their 60s who have been contributing for decades. Breaking it down by generation tells a much more useful story.
Here is how average 401(k) balances look across generations, according to Fidelity's Q2 2026 data:
| Generation | Average 401(k) balance |
| Baby boomers (born 1946–1964) | $283,200 |
| Gen X (born 1965–1980) | $240,700 |
| Millennials (born 1981–1996) | $94,300 |
| Gen Z (born 1997–2012) | $20,800 |
The gaps between generations are not surprising. A baby boomer who has contributed consistently for 35 to 40 years benefits from decades of compound growth that a millennial or Gen Z worker simply has not had time to accumulate yet.
Millennials posted the strongest momentum of any generation in Q2, with average balances climbing 26.1% year over year and 14.2% in the quarter alone. Time in the market and consistent contributions are doing exactly what they are supposed to do for younger savers.
Why the average overstates what most people have
Here is the catch with any average: A relatively small number of high earners and long-tenured savers push the number well above what a typical worker actually holds.
Fidelity's data shows 769,000 savers now hold seven-figure 401(k) balances. Those accounts pull the average significantly upward.
The median, the point where half of savers have more and half have less, is a more honest comparison. If your balance is below the average for your generation, that does not mean you are behind most people your age. It often means you are closer to typical than the headline number suggests.

A sign of financial strain hiding in the data
The record balances come with a caveat worth noting.
Nineteen and a half percent of workers now carry an outstanding 401(k) loan, up from 19.2% at the end of Q1. That means roughly one in five workers is borrowing against their retirement savings to cover other expenses.
Rising balances and rising loan use in the same quarter suggest that for a meaningful share of workers, the headline record does not reflect what their retirement actually looks like day to day.
What this means for your savings right now
The comparison is most useful as a prompt to act, not as a verdict on whether you are doing well or poorly.
Capture the full employer match first
The employer match is the highest guaranteed return available in any retirement account. If you are not yet contributing enough to get all of it, that is the single highest-priority change you can make. At a record 81.2% match capture rate, nearly one in five workers is still leaving this money on the table.
Check your savings rate against the 15% benchmark
The current national average of 14.4% is close but not there yet. If your combined rate is below 10%, raising it by even one percentage point can make a significant difference over time through compound growth.
Stay invested through volatility
Q1 2026 reminded everyone that markets fall. Q2 reminded everyone that markets also recover. Workers who stayed invested and kept contributing through the Q1 drop captured the full benefit of the Q2 rebound. Pulling out during downturns locks in losses and misses the recovery.
Give time its proper credit
Millennials who stayed in the same plan for at least five years averaged $180,200. Consistency and time matter more than any single year's return.
Bottom line
The average 401(k) balance is at a record $155,800, driven by a strong market rebound and savings rates that are close to Fidelity's recommended benchmark.
The most practical step you can take after reviewing these numbers is to check whether your own savings rate is on track and whether you are capturing your full employer match. Those two variables are the ones you directly control, and they are what compound into the kind of account balance that can genuinely build real wealth over a 30- to 40-year career. The market does the rest.
