Fact checked

The end of 2024 brought what looked like the end of Big Lots, with a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing and an announcement that all stores would close in 2025 — but Big Lots got a Christmas miracle. Just days after the holiday, the discount retail chain reached an agreement with Gordon Brothers Retail Partners that would keep the brand alive under Variety Wholesalers.

They're moving fast now, with 70 store openings most recently and even more planned to open on June 5. See if a location has opened near you, so you can start saving serious money on home essentials.

History of Big Lots

The first iteration of the popular discount chain was opened in 1982 and called Odd Lots. As the stores expanded, they began operating under the name Big Lots to reference their business model of acquiring closeout and overstock merchandise in bulk and then reselling it at discount prices.

The company's bankruptcy

In September of 2024, Big Lots officially filed for bankruptcy. According to Big Lots' leadership, the bankruptcy was a result of the impacts of inflation, rising costs, and high interest rates. At the time, the company had posted 16 consecutive quarters of comparable sales declines, and it had already been closing underperforming stores.

"The actions we are taking today will enable us to move forward with new owners who believe in our business and provide financial stability, while we optimize our operational footprint, accelerate improvement in our performance, and deliver on our promise to be the leader in extreme value," Bruce Thorn, the retailer's president and CEO, said at the time.

What's next for Big Lots

The bankruptcy led to an agreement with Gordon Brothers Retail Partners investment firm that would transfer up to 219 stores to Variety Wholesalers, but still with the Big Lots name. These locations were remodeled and restocked, and are now opening in waves through June.

"We're thrilled to bring the Big Lots! brand back to life by offering more deals than ever, lots of famous brands and a new apparel department for the entire family," said president and CEO of Variety Wholesalers Lisa Seigies in a press release.

The first wave began in April with nine openings, and a second wave began May 1 with 60 stores. As of May 15, 70 additional stores opened, and the remaining locations owned by Variety Wholesalers will continue opening on June 5.

Keep reading to find out which locations just reopened on May 15 and which are planned for June 5.
