Walk into most American towns and you'll pass a Chase, a Wells Fargo, or a Bank of America branch – the megabanks with the marketing budgets to match their location counts. But which bank is actually the most common one on the ground varies a lot more than the big national names would suggest, and in many states, it isn't a megabank at all.

FinanceBuzz's research team analyzed branch location and population data across all 50 states and the District of Columbia to determine which single bank has the most physical branches in every state. While Chase is the most common bank in the U.S., topping the list in 8 states with nearly 5,000 branches, the picture looks very different state by state.

Key findings

  • JPMorgan Chase (operating as Chase Bank) is the most common bank in 8 states, the most of any single lender.
  • Wells Fargo is the most common bank in 7 states plus Washington, D.C., putting the two megabanks together atop just 15 of 51 jurisdictions (29%).
  • Chase is also the most common bank in the United States overall, with nearly 5,000 branches across the country.
  • Bank of America ranks third nationally in number of branches (3,640), but doesn't top the list in a single state.
  • Regions Bank, M&T Bank, Truist Bank, and U.S. Bank are each the most common bank in 3 states, largely clustered around their home regions.

The most popular bank in every state

America's banking landscape is a diverse one. There are giant companies such as JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, U.S. Bank, and PNC Bank with national scope and locations in many states across the nation, operating alongside small, regional banks that may only have several dozen brick-and-mortar bank locations centrally located in a single region of the country.

Based on branch count, 25 different banks were the most popular or most common in at least one state, showing the diversity of banking options across the country. There are six banking corporations with at least 1,500 branches in American states (JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, Bank of America, PNC Bank, U.S. Bank, and Truist Bank), and those megabanks were most popular in a combined 23 states, while smaller financial institutions won out in the rest of the country.

Chase took the top spot in more states than any other bank, 8 total. That is just one state ahead of its megabank peer Wells Fargo, which was the most popular bank in 7 different places. After those financial giants, four other institutions were most popular in three states each. Those banks are U.S. Bank, Truist Bank, Regions Bank, and M&T Bank. While Chase and Wells are the biggest names in this group, with 4,993 and 4,214 branches across the country, even the smaller institutions boast hundreds of locations, as M&T is the smallest of this cohort with "only" 979 branches nationwide.

While these nationally focused chains lead the way in large swaths of the country, there are plenty of states where banks with a more regional focus are most popular. This includes multiple states where a bank headquartered within the state takes the top spot, such as Bank of Hawaii in Hawaii, Zions Bank in Utah, City National Bank of West Virginia in West Virginia, and Glacier Bank in Montana, among others.

Finally, looking at the results in context shows just how much banking access can differ across the country. In states like California, New York, Texas, and Florida, there are more than 400 locations of the most common bank chain and thousands of banks overall. In less populated parts of the country such as Alaska, Wyoming, Hawaii, and more, there are fewer than 300 banks in total across the entire state, with the most popular banks in those states having just a few dozen branches, if that.

Which banks have the most branches nationwide

When looking at banks with the most overall branches and locations across the country in the context of state-by-state popularity, one company near the top of the list stands out: Bank of America has branches everywhere but leads nowhere. Bank of America ranks third nationally with 3,640 branch locations, more than Truist, U.S. Bank, PNC, and every regional bank in this dataset. Yet, it isn't the single most common bank in any of the 50 states or D.C.

Bar chart ranking Chase, Wells Fargo, Bank of America, and 13 other U.S. banks by total branch count, per FDIC data.

That's a function of spread rather than weakness: Bank of America's branches are distributed broadly enough across large states that it consistently finishes second or third locally, without concentrating enough share in any one state to take the top spot the way Chase and Wells Fargo do in their strongest markets. That is how Bank of America can be one of just three banks with more than 3,000 branches nationwide (along with Chase and Wells Fargo) without ranking as the most popular bank in even a single state.

Why regional banks still hold their ground against the megabanks

Despite decades of consolidation in U.S. banking, many states' most-visited bank is still a name that's largely unknown outside its home region. A few forces explain why:

  • Legacy mergers gave many regional banks dense, decades-old branch networks concentrated in one part of the country, rather than a national footprint.
  • Several of the leading regional banks are headquartered in the state they top, and local ties tend to translate into local branch loyalty and continued investment in those markets.
  • Megabanks have shifted branch growth toward the largest metro areas rather than trying to match community banks branch-for-branch in smaller or rural states.
  • Community and regional banks often compete on local relationships and small-business lending, which keeps them relevant even as online and mobile-first banks grow nationally.

Bottom line

Just because a bank has the most locations in your area doesn't mean it's the right choice for you and your financial needs. Here are some tips for finding the right financial fit.

  • Don't assume the biggest branch network is the best deal: Megabanks may lead on locations, but the best online banks and neobanks often beat their larger competitors on fees and rates without a branch requirement.
  • Compare offers: No matter what kind of bank is most prevalent in your area, it is worth comparing their offerings with those of smaller banks to make sure you are getting the best checking account bonus offer or the right high-yield savings account for you.
  • Find the bank that is right for you: Bigger isn't always better when it comes to banking, and the best banks in America aren't necessarily the ones with the largest footprint. Researching what different financial institutions offer and comparing it with what is important to you can go a long way toward finding the right banking fit.

Methodology

FinanceBuzz's research team analyzed FDIC BankFind branch locations alongside Census population estimates to determine the most common bank by physical branch count in each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia, and to rank banks by total branches nationwide. "Locations per 100,000 people" reflects each bank's branch count divided by state population, scaled to 100,000 residents. FDIC data was accessed in July 2026.
