Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD) crossed the $1 trillion market capitalization mark on September 22 as shares surged past $612, making it the second semiconductor company to reach that milestone behind Nvidia. The surge followed a quarter in which AMD's data center segment posted $6.7 billion in revenue, a 107% year-over-year jump that now represents 58% of total company sales, the company's earnings release confirmed.

CEO Lisa Su guided data center revenue to more than double again in 2027, anchored by the Helios rackscale platform already shipping to OpenAI, Microsoft, and Meta. Retirees whose S&P 500 index funds now carry growing semiconductor exposure may want to evaluate their own hidden signs of financial stability before deciding whether the concentration still fits their risk profile.

AMD's market cap crossed $1 trillion on September 22 as shares surged past $600

AMD shares climbed 9.4% to approximately $612 on September 22, adding roughly $200 billion in market value over the preceding week, Euronews confirmed via Yahoo Finance. The milestone makes AMD the second chipmaker to reach a $1 trillion valuation, joining Nvidia, whose market cap approaches $5.5 trillion.

AMD's stock has nearly tripled over the past year, driven by optimism that its Instinct AI accelerators and EPYC server processors are capturing a meaningful share of a growing market from Nvidia, CNBC wrote in its Q2 coverage. The resurgence of the central processing unit as an essential component for running AI agents has added a second growth driver alongside GPUs.

Data center revenue doubled to $6.7 billion and now represents 58% of total sales

AMD's Q2 2026 results showed record revenue of $11.5 billion, up 50% year over year, with the data center segment driving the majority of growth, the AMD earnings release showed. The segment breakdown includes the following.

  • Data center revenue of $6.7 billion, up 107% year over year, with $2.1 billion in operating income at a 31% margin.
  • Client revenue of $3.1 billion, up 23%, driven by Ryzen processor demand.
  • Embedded revenue of $977 million, up 19% as demand recovered across multiple end markets.
  • Gaming revenue of $779 million, down 31% on lower semi-custom sales.

Non-GAAP earnings per share reached $1.66, beating the $1.62 consensus, while GAAP EPS came in at $1.38, Yahoo Finance detailed from the results. CFO Jean Hu said data center sales represented 58% of company revenue for the quarter, up from roughly 42% a year earlier.

The Helios rackscale platform is shipping to OpenAI, Microsoft, and Meta

AMD officially launched its Helios rack-scale AI system at its Advancing AI event two weeks before Q2 earnings, with shipments beginning by the end of Q3 and a ramp planned for Q4, CNBC confirmed. Helios combines AMD's CPUs, GPUs, and networking chips into a complete system that competes directly with Nvidia's full-rack offerings.

AMD also announced a strategic agreement with Anthropic to deploy up to two gigawatts of Instinct MI450 GPUs in Helios racks beginning in the first half of 2027, alongside an investment of up to $5 billion in the AI company, DataCenterDynamics detailed. Su told analysts AMD plans to launch a new rack-scale AI platform every year.

Lisa Su guided for data center revenue to more than double in 2027

Su told analysts on the Q2 earnings call that AMD expects data center sales to double in 2027, with server CPU revenue growing more than 80% year over year in the second half of 2026 and more than 70% in 2027, CNBC wrote. The guidance puts AMD's data center segment on a trajectory toward potentially exceeding $25 billion in annual revenue next year.

Su described the company as being "still in the early stages of a multi-year AI adoption cycle," Investing.com captured from the earnings call. The projection depends on continued Helios deployments, Instinct MI450 ramp, and growing EPYC server demand, all of which face competitive pressure from Nvidia's dominant market position.

Q3 revenue guidance of $13 billion topped the $12.5 billion consensus

AMD guided third-quarter revenue to a range of $12.7 billion to $13.3 billion, implying year-over-year growth of roughly 41% at the midpoint, Yahoo Finance detailed. The midpoint of approximately $13 billion exceeded the $12.5 billion consensus, signaling that management sees the data center acceleration continuing into the second half.

Non-GAAP gross margin is expected to hold near 56%, and data center and embedded revenue are both projected to grow at double-digit rates in Q3, the earnings release indicated. For your portfolio, guidance that beats expectations heading into a seasonally strong second half reduces one layer of uncertainty around the $1 trillion valuation.

AMD still trails Nvidia's $5.5 trillion valuation by a wide margin

Nvidia's market capitalization approaches $5.5 trillion, roughly 5.5 times AMD's new $1 trillion milestone, Euronews confirmed. Nvidia's Q2 revenue of $96.2 billion dwarfs AMD's $11.5 billion, and its data center segment alone generates more than eight times what AMD's does.

AMD's bull case rests on chipping away at that gap rather than closing it. EPYC processors, the Instinct accelerator lineup, and the Helios platform give AMD products across three layers of the AI stack, a breadth that could support sustained double-digit market share gains even while Nvidia retains the overall lead.

Bottom line

AMD's $1 trillion milestone arrives on the back of a data center segment that doubled to $6.7 billion, now represents 58% of total revenue, and is guided to double again in 2027. The Helios platform gives AMD a full-rack AI system competing directly with Nvidia, and partnerships with OpenAI, Microsoft, Meta, and Anthropic provide a customer base that validates the product at scale.

Exploring must-have investing apps to monitor AMD's quarterly data center mix and Helios ramp could help you determine whether the stock's trajectory has further room to run or whether the $1 trillion valuation already reflects the growth Lisa Su is guiding. Retirees with broad index exposure already carry this shift in their portfolios, making semiconductor concentration worth reviewing.
