If your grocery bill still feels stubborn, ask which store gives you the better unit price on items you actually use.
Recent grocery inflation keeps that comparison worth doing. In August 2026, Bureau of Labor Statistics regional CPI releases still showed food-at-home prices rising year over year, including 3.1% in the New York area and 3.5% in the Baltimore area. That means a few cents per ounce, pound, bag, or tablet can matter on repeat purchases.
Costco's bulk packs could beat Walmart on several weekly and household staples, and using the best Costco hacks could stretch those savings further. Still, the win depends on package size, storage space, and whether your membership earns its keep.

The membership math
Costco's basic Gold Star membership costs $65 a year, so the shelf price isn't the full story. If you shop there once or twice a year, Walmart's no-membership model might leave you ahead, even when Costco's unit price is lower.
The math looks different if you regularly buy the same pantry goods, paper products, medicine, and protein. Saving about $6 a month would cover a $65 annual fee, but only if those savings come from things you'd buy anyway.
That's the key guardrail. A 200-count box isn't a deal if half sits unused, gets wasted, or pushes this week's budget too far.
Rotisserie chicken
Costco's rotisserie chicken remains one of the clearest head-to-head tests because the price is simple and the item is ready for dinner. Costco has continued to hold its rotisserie chicken at $4.99, while Walmart rotisserie chickens run about $5.97 for the whole bird.
The gap matters only if the size is reasonably comparable. Costco's bird is often described as roughly 3 to 4 pounds, while Walmart's can be smaller, so the smartest comparison is still the weight label at your store.
If your store's birds vary by time of day, check the label before you grab one. Costco could be stronger when the per-pound price stays lower, but Walmart might be more convenient if it saves another trip.
Butter
Butter is a safer bulk buy because it freezes well and shows up in cooking, baking, and meal prep. In one 2026 comparison, Kirkland Signature butter came in at $2.12 per pound, compared with $3.23 per pound for Great Value butter at Walmart.
That gives Costco a unit-price edge in that check if you have freezer space and use butter often. The catch is cash flow: Walmart's smaller package could cost less at checkout, even if the per-pound price is higher.
Shredded cheese
Shredded cheese can work well for families, meal preppers, and anyone who uses it for tacos, eggs, casseroles, or lunches. Shredded Mexican-style cheese at Costco is $2.60 per pound, or about 16 cents per ounce.
Walmart's shredded cheese sits at $3.46 per pound, or about 22 cents per ounce. That puts Costco ahead when you're comparing similar cheese types and package formats.
There's a spoilage limit, though. If you rarely finish shredded cheese before it dries out or molds, Walmart's smaller bag might be smarter. Costco's advantage exists when you use it quickly, split it, or freeze part of the package.
Pure maple syrup
Pure maple syrup is where unit pricing matters because the bottle price can sting. Costco's Kirkland Signature Organic Pure Maple Syrup is listed at $14.99 for a 33.8-ounce bottle, or about 44 cents per ounce.
At Walmart, Great Value Pure Maple Syrup is $5.48 for an 8-ounce bottle, or about 69 cents per ounce. If those local prices hold, Costco could be the better buy for real maple syrup, especially if pancakes, oatmeal, baking, or marinades put it on your regular list.
Don't compare it with pancake syrup and call it a win. Pancake syrup is a different product and often costs far less upfront at Walmart. Costco's advantage applies when you're buying pure maple syrup, not the cheapest sweet topping.
Kitchen trash bags
Trash bags are a strong bulk candidate because they don't spoil and most households use them steadily. Costco's Kirkland Signature Scented Flex-Tech Kitchen Trash Bags are listed at $17.99 for a 200-count box of 13-gallon bags, or about 9 cents per bag.
Walmart's Great Value 13-gallon Drawstring Kitchen Trash Bags are $16.73 for 120 bags, or about 14 cents per bag. If the bag strength, gallon size, and drawstring style match what you buy, Costco could save money over the full box.
Storage and fit matter. If the Costco bags are the wrong size for your kitchen bin, the unit price doesn't help. If they fit and you have room, this is a cleaner Costco win.
Allergy medicine
Over-the-counter allergy medicine can have sharp per-dose differences, but compare the active ingredient. Costco's Kirkland Signature Aller-Tec 10 mg tablets are listed at $14.99 for 365 cetirizine tablets, or about 4 cents per tablet. Sometimes, Costco will offer a coupon for this product and it can be priced as low as $11.99.
Name-brand Zyrtec at Walmart is $39.97 for 90 tablets. Walmart's Equate version costs less than the name brand at only $7.98 for a 90 count, but compare the active ingredient, dosage, count, and per-tablet shelf tag before you decide.
Don't swap medications casually. If your doctor, pharmacist, or allergy plan points you toward a different ingredient, follow that guidance first. The Costco edge exists only when the active ingredient and dosage match what you already use.
Bottom line
Costco could beat Walmart on unit price for staples including rotisserie chicken, butter, maple syrup, and allergy medicine. But the lower unit price helps only when you have the membership, storage space, and realistic demand to use the bulk size.
Before you stock up, compare the shelf tag by ounce, pound, bag, or tablet. Then add the membership fee to your math. If Costco helps you save on items you buy every month, it might be worth the trip. If not, Walmart's smaller packages and no annual fee could keep your budget simpler, especially if you use one of the best cash back credit cards to get even more value.
