- A savings account's interest rate isn't fixed. Mine sat at a fraction of a percent for five years without a single notification.
- On a balance of $25,000, the gap between 0.01% and a competitive rate was more than $5,000 in lost interest over five years.
- Checking your own rate takes about two minutes.
- At the national average savings rate of 0.38% (as of 06/15/26), $20,000 earns $76 a year. The same balance could earn up to nine times more with a SoFi Checking and Savings account. See SoFi®'s current rate.
I used to open my banking app to check my balance, not my interest rate. It hadn't occurred to me that it was worth looking at. But there it was. Annual percentage yield (APY): 0.01%. The first time I saw it, I actually assumed it was a typo. It wasn't.
I'd pictured my APY as somewhere near 1%, the vague number I remembered savings accounts paying. Instead, five years of money had been landing in an account that, on my $25,000 balance, had earned me $12.50 in interest. A high-yield account paying 3.75% would have earned roughly $5,052. That gap is what this story is about.
Why I never checked
I never really had a reason to check my APY. My paycheck hit the account automatically, bills were paid automatically, and the balance went up over time. The system was working.
I'd opened the account before I got my first full-time job, at a bank down the street from where I lived. I never had a reason to revisit that decision.
I'd also assumed savings accounts were interchangeable. The rate wasn't something I pictured as low or high, it was just a fixed feature of the account, like the color of the debit card. It never crossed my mind that two savings accounts could pay wildly different amounts on the same balance.
If I'm honest, I was also lazy. Looking closely at my account felt like it could easily eat up an entire afternoon, and I didn't need that in my life. Turns out, I was wrong.
What five years at 0.01% cost me
On a $25,000 balance, five years at 0.01% APY earned me $12.50. Just to clarify: that's not per year; that's the total. At a competitive rate of 3.75%, the same balance would have earned about $5,052. That's a difference of roughly $5,040, sitting in an account I checked only for the balance.
You don't need my exact numbers to see where you're at. Here's what leaving money in an old savings account actually costs at other balances.
| Balance | Earned at 0.01% over 5 years | Earned at 3.75% over 5 years | Difference |
| $5,000 | $2.50 | $1,010.50 | $1,008 |
| $10,000 | $5.00 | $2,021 | $2,016 |
| $25,000 | $12.50 | $5,052.50 | $5,040 |
These figures assume the rate and the balance hold steady for five years, with interest compounding annually.
The low rate wasn't really the expensive part. Five years of not looking was.

How to check your own rate in two minutes
Finding your rate is easy:
- In your banking app, open the savings account, then look for "account details," "account info," or a similar tab. It's not on the main balance screen. The rate is usually labeled APY or "interest rate."
- On a paper or PDF statement, the interest rate and the interest paid for that period are in the account details or summary.
- On the bank's website, search "[bank name] savings account rate." Big banks post their current APY on a rates page, even when it's not something they advertise.
- If you can't find it any other way, a quick call to customer service could get you the number in under a minute.
Once you have the number, compare it to your bank's advertised savings rate and to the national average, which is currently 0.38%. If your rate is close to zero, welcome to the team. Traditional savings accounts at large banks tend to sit well below the national average, which is part of why the number can stay so low for so long without anyone noticing.
What I did next
I opened a high-yield savings account at an online bank and transferred the $25,000, keeping a small buffer in my original account because I didn't want to close it entirely.
The move took about 10 minutes, and the money was accessible within five business days.
Bottom line
The 0.01% wasn't a typo or a fluke. It was just what happens to a rate nobody checks. My $25,000 now earns 3.75% at an online bank. The old account is still open with a small buffer in it, kept for the relationship rather than the returns.
If you haven't looked at your own rate in a while, take the two minutes. Mine had been sitting there the whole time, waiting to be noticed.
FAQs
How do I find my savings account interest rate?
Check the account details section of your banking app (not the main balance screen), your monthly statement, or your bank's website (search "[bank name] savings rate"). You could also call customer service and ask directly.
What is a good savings account rate right now?
As of August 2026, the national average for a traditional savings account is 0.38% APY, while competitive high-yield savings accounts, mostly at online banks, pay between 3.5% and 4.1% APY. Anything close to the national average or below is worth a second look.
Do savings account rates change automatically?
Yes. Banks raise or lower a savings account's rate at any time, often in response to changes in the Federal Reserve's benchmark rate, and they don't always notify you when it happens. That's why the rate on an account you haven't checked in years could quietly drift toward the bottom of the range, even if it were competitive to begin with.
Would You Spend Ten Minutes for $1,465?
That's roughly the year's difference on $40,000 between the national average and the up-to-4.00% rates available now. And ten minutes isn't a figure of speech. You just provide some information, like your name, address, Social Security number, and the account your deposit money's coming from. But rates are variable and follow the market, which is why the only number worth acting on is today's. Compare the current top accounts here.
