Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOGL) shares traded at $334.41 in Wednesday afternoon trading, down $5.87, or 1.72%, from the previous close of $340.28. Pullbacks in widely held mega-cap names are a useful prompt to check where you stand financially before adding to or trimming positions. The stock opened at $338.92 and moved between $330.38 and $338.92 as investors weighed CEO Sundar Pichai's comments that Google Cloud is giving up some short-term revenue to reserve computing power for frontier AI work.

Cloud capacity trade-off

Pichai said on the Big Technology Podcast that Google Cloud is forgoing short-term revenues because Alphabet is making compute trade-offs to support frontier AI development. He said making sure Google DeepMind has enough computing capacity for frontier work is non-negotiable. He also said accommodating new customers requesting capacity for 2027 would be incredibly difficult.

The stock's range

GOOGL opened at $338.92, matching its intraday high, before falling as low as $330.38. The move leaves shares below the previous close of $340.28 and keeps the session anchored by company-specific AI capacity concerns. The $8.54 gap between the day's high and low shows a wide trading range for a mega-cap technology stock.

AI spending is central

Alphabet expects to spend between $195 billion and $205 billion on capital expenditures this year, with much of the spending tied to AI infrastructure. Capital expenditures are money spent on long-term assets such as data centers, servers, and chips. Google Cloud revenue rose 82% to $24.8 billion in the second quarter, and its contracted backlog reached nearly $514 billion.

Earnings date is set

Alphabet is scheduled to report third-quarter results after the close on Oct. 28, with the market focused on Google Cloud growth, AI spending, and cash generation. The company reported negative free cash flow of $5.9 billion in the second quarter despite substantial cash from operations. Free cash flow is cash left after operations and capital spending.

Analyst caution continues

KeyBanc analyst Justin Patterson lowered his Alphabet price target to $410 from $435 while maintaining an Overweight rating. The call cited lower Google Services earnings estimates and a more conservative Google Cloud valuation tied to TPU contributions. TPUs are Google's custom chips for artificial intelligence workloads.

Legal pressure lingers

A securities-law notice says Alphabet has been sued in a class action alleging that the company misrepresented the progress of development of its Gemini 3.5 Pro AI model. The notice lists a Dec. 1, 2026, lead plaintiff deadline. The lawsuit push adds another reputational issue as Alphabet heads into the next earnings report.

OpenAI deal adds complexity

OpenAI announced that frontier AI models, including GPT-6 Astra and Codex, will become available through Google Cloud's Model Garden and Marketplace in the coming weeks. The rollout follows the expiration of OpenAI's exclusive distribution deal with Microsoft. The move could add demand for Google Cloud while putting a major AI rival inside Google's own cloud channel.

Bottom line

GOOGL is lower in Wednesday afternoon trading while the core AI story remains tied to demand for computing power. For anyone planning to start investing in Alphabet, the timing question is tricky because the market is trying to balance strong cloud growth and a large AI backlog against revenue trade-offs, spending pressure, analyst caution, and legal headlines ahead of the Oct. 28 earnings report. The next test is whether management can show that today's capacity choices support long-term AI demand without eroding near-term financial expectations.
