Price action improved

GOOGL's gain put the stock above both its open and previous close during the afternoon session. The session's $352.60 high showed buyers pushing the stock beyond the early move before it eased back to $349.48.

The move followed recent pressure tied to AI competition and questions about the cost of Alphabet's infrastructure buildout. The market is weighing faster cloud demand against the size of the spending plan needed to support it.

Cloud backlog jumped

Google Cloud's backlog reached $514 billion in Q2 FY2026. Backlog is contracted business that has not yet been billed or recognized as revenue.

That figure is central to current optimism around Alphabet's AI infrastructure. It suggests large customers are committing to future cloud capacity even as the company spends heavily on data centers and hardware.

Q2 growth stayed strong

Alphabet reported Q2 2026 revenue of $119.8 billion, up 24% from a year earlier. The quarter marked the company's 12th straight period of double-digit revenue growth.

Google Cloud revenue rose 82% to $24.8 billion, ahead of consensus estimates of about $22.3 billion. Advertising remained the largest business, with revenue up 14% to $81.6 billion.

TPU revenue is emerging

Q2 2026 was the first period in which Alphabet recognized revenue from sales of its tensor processing units. TPUs are Google's custom chips built to run AI workloads.

Google's chip strategy is now moving beyond leased cloud capacity and internal use. The company is also testing whether TPUs can operate in low Earth orbit as part of a broader space-based AI infrastructure effort.

AI spending is under scrutiny

Management raised Alphabet's 2026 capital expenditure forecast to between $195 billion and $205 billion, up from a prior range of $180 billion to $190 billion. Capital expenditures are long-term investments in assets such as data centers, servers, chips, and other hardware.

Alphabet's Q2 free cash flow was negative $5.9 billion as capital spending reached $44.9 billion. That increased attention on how quickly AI investments can produce returns.

Regulatory pressure persists

Ireland's privacy regulator fined Google €403 million over historical location-data practices under GDPR. GDPR is Europe's strict data protection law.

Britain's competition watchdog also proposed giving consumers more search choice, including AI assistant options on Android and Chrome. Those developments add to Alphabet's regulatory overhang as the company pushes deeper into AI search and mobile software.

Competition is intensifying

Rivals Anthropic and OpenAI released cheaper frontier AI models, adding pressure to AI pricing across the market. Lower model prices can squeeze the margins cloud providers earn from running AI queries for customers.

Meta's Muse AI assistant surpassed 2.8 million downloads in its first 12 days, based on Apptopia data reported by Reuters. The adoption figure sharpened attention on whether consumer AI assistants can pull usage away from traditional search.

Bottom line

GOOGL's Wednesday advance reflects a market balancing strong AI and cloud demand against heavy spending, regulation, and tougher competition. For those ready to start investing in Alphabet, the next focal points are whether Google Cloud's backlog converts into revenue and whether TPU sales can help justify the company's infrastructure buildout.
