Azure chip catalyst

Microsoft unveiled the Azure Maia 300 at the OCP Global Summit in San Jose. The chip joins Microsoft's Maia 200 and Maia 100 efforts as the company works to reduce reliance on third-party AI processors from suppliers such as Nvidia and AMD.

Maia 300 is aimed at AI inference, the stage when a trained model is used to answer questions, write text, analyze information, or complete other tasks. That makes it relevant to the cost and capacity of running AI services at scale.

Efficiency claims matter

Microsoft expects Maia 300 to deliver 40% more tokens per megawatt than leading GPU-based systems. Tokens are units of data processed by AI models, so the claim puts power efficiency at the center of the AI infrastructure story.

The company also said Maia 300 will begin production deployments in 2027 and that it plans to scale the Azure Maia family to multi-gigawatt deployments. Microsoft has not framed that rollout in its official announcement only by chip unit count.

Copilot and Azure

Microsoft is positioning Maia as a primary AI inference system for Microsoft products and services, linking the chip effort to the company's broader AI software and cloud strategy. Investor attention remains tied to whether custom silicon can support products such as Copilot, Azure Foundry, and other enterprise services more efficiently.

Barclays analyst Raimo Lenschow said AI-driven growth is beginning to emerge at Microsoft Azure ahead of the company's next earnings report expected on Oct. 28. That keeps Azure growth at the center of the market's earnings setup.

Analysts lift targets

Deutsche Bank analyst Brad Zelnick raised his Microsoft price target to $600 from $550 and kept a Buy rating. The move was part of the firm's first-quarter earnings preview.

Recent analyst moves also included Evercore ISI lifting its forecast to $635 on Oct. 7, Scotiabank raising its forecast to $615 on Oct. 5, and Wells Fargo increasing its forecast to $725 on Oct. 1. These are analyst views, not company guidance.

Earnings date looms

Microsoft is scheduled to report quarterly earnings on Oct. 28. Analysts expect earnings of $4.73 per share, up from $4.13 a year earlier.

Revenue is projected at $90.64 billion, compared with $77.67 billion a year earlier. Those estimates put Azure demand, AI infrastructure spending, and profit margins in focus as the company heads into its next update.

Gaming probe persists

Italy's antitrust authority launched an EU-backed investigation into several Microsoft-owned gaming companies, including Activision Blizzard, over their use of in-game virtual currencies. The probe is separate from the AI chip catalyst, but it keeps Microsoft's gaming business in the regulatory spotlight.

Microsoft President Brad Smith also called for urgent global regulation of artificial intelligence, arguing that AI systems face fewer safety rules than everyday consumer products. That keeps the company in the policy debate around artificial intelligence as its AI infrastructure ambitions expand.

Bottom line

MSFT is higher in Tuesday afternoon trading as the market weighs a fresh AI chip catalyst against coming earnings and regulatory headlines. The rally has drawn fresh interest from retail traders looking to start investing in AI-linked megacaps while momentum favors the sector. The next major test is whether Microsoft's Azure growth and AI spending plans support the enthusiasm around Maia 300.
