Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) traded near $555.05 in Wednesday afternoon trading, up $34.06, or +6.54%, from its $520.99 previous close.

The latest move follows stronger cloud results, AI demand, and a broader improvement in sentiment after the U.S. midterm elections, a stretch that has long-term shareholders doing better financially than they were just a quarter ago. Tuesday's advance had also been linked in recent coverage to a wider rally in AI cloud stocks.

Trading at session highs

Shares opened at $532.21 and set the day's low at the open, then climbed as high as $558.05. That kept MSFT well above Tuesday's $520.99 close and extended a sharp rebound that recent coverage described as a move into record territory. The stock remained close to the top of the day's range by Wednesday afternoon.

Quarter beat estimates

Microsoft reported fiscal first-quarter revenue of $92.28 billion, up 19% from a year earlier and ahead of the $90.62 billion consensus estimate. Earnings per share were $4.92, above the $4.71 estimate, and net income rose 32%. The beat gave the rally a company-specific anchor after broader AI stocks had already drawn interest.

Azure growth led

Azure cloud platform revenue grew 48%, above the roughly 45% consensus, and reached $33.17 billion. Microsoft Cloud revenue rose 30% to $63.9 billion, reinforcing the view that corporate AI workloads are still feeding demand for cloud capacity. Azure is Microsoft's cloud computing platform for business customers and developers.

Backlog jumped higher

Commercial remaining performance obligations increased to $677 billion, up 73% year over year. Remaining performance obligations are contracted sales that have not yet been counted as revenue, subject to timing and contract terms. The figure gives Wall Street a window into future cloud demand, even though revenue recognition can vary.

Guidance raised expectations

Management guided for second-quarter revenue of $96.0 billion to $97.1 billion. Microsoft also projected Azure growth of 49% to 50% in constant currency. Constant currency removes the effect of exchange-rate swings so analysts can compare growth in the underlying business.

Analysts moved targets

Yorkville Ives' Dan Ives maintained an Outperform rating and a $615 price target, calling Microsoft his top software pick heading into 2027. BNP Paribas raised its price target to $632, citing Azure acceleration. The broader analyst consensus stood at Moderate Buy with an average target near $609.

Spending remains in focus

The rally has not erased questions about infrastructure spending, future computing commitments, custom chips, and Microsoft's relationship with Anthropic. The debate centers on whether those investments can deliver sufficient returns as demand for AI computing capacity rises. Those costs matter because AI services require data centers, power, networking equipment, and specialized chips.

Bottom line

Microsoft is rallying because earnings, Azure growth, guidance, and AI-linked demand all point to momentum in its cloud business. The stock's move from a $532.21 open to near $555.05 puts focus on whether cloud growth can keep absorbing heavy infrastructure costs after the midterm-driven market rebound.

Surges like this tend to attract newcomers ready to start investing in AI-driven plays, but sustained gains depend on more than one strong quarter. Market watchers are also tracking whether the rally can hold as spending and regulatory scrutiny remain part of the Big Tech AI backdrop.
