Shares opened at $498.02, touched a low of $497.25, and reached $519.40 at the session high. Long-term MSFT holders are doing better financially after Friday's action, with the stock now trading nearly $20 above Thursday's close. The rally put the focus back on Microsoft's enterprise AI push, its cloud business, and a redesigned Copilot product announced Friday.

The stock breaks higher

Microsoft's gain left the stock up 4.00% on the day, a sizable move for one of the market's largest technology companies. The intraday range was wide, with the stock moving from $497.25 to $519.40. Recent market commentary tied the move to institutional optimism around artificial intelligence, cloud ecosystems, Azure, and commercial productivity software.

Copilot gets a redesign

Microsoft unveiled a redesigned Copilot on Friday with new Home, Code, and Autopilot capabilities. The rollout extends the company's push to make Copilot a central workplace AI tool across everyday productivity and software development tasks. The announcement landed as investors continued to assess how quickly AI features could turn into recurring software revenue.

Analysts lean positive

Wall Street sentiment remained part of the move. Microsoft carries a Buy consensus rating and an average price forecast of $567.04. Stifel upgraded Microsoft to Buy on Sept. 23 and raised its forecast to $575.00, while Oppenheimer maintained an Outperform rating and lifted its forecast to $570.00 on Sept. 22. Cantor Fitzgerald maintained an Overweight rating and raised its target to $608.00 on Sept. 21.

Azure remains central

Recent annual results showed Azure revenue surpassed $100 billion for the first time, while Microsoft 365 Copilot topped 30 million paid seats. Those figures reinforced the view that Microsoft's AI business is tied to cloud infrastructure and subscription software. Reports on those results also kept attention on whether Microsoft can translate AI adoption into recurring enterprise revenue.

Reporting changes matter

Microsoft's reporting and investor disclosures remained part of the debate. The company recently described segment restructuring as reflecting how it increasingly manages its businesses internally, and it maintained its expectation for Microsoft 365 growth to accelerate through fiscal 2027. Microsoft also said OpenAI revenue sharing has not been a meaningful source of Azure outperformance in recent quarters and that it would disclose the contribution if it became material.

AI spending scrutiny

Microsoft's AI ambitions also come with heavier spending questions. Goldman Sachs strategists led by Ryan Hammond expect capital spending by Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft, Meta Platforms, and Oracle to rise more than 50% to $1.2 trillion in 2027. The group is on track to spend about $800 billion in 2026, and Goldman estimates hyperscalers need roughly $300 billion in annual AI revenue to break even on those investments.

Bottom line

MSFT's Friday rally reflected a mix of current product news and a broader Wall Street narrative around AI and cloud growth. That kind of broad-based momentum is often what pushes sidelined investors to start investing in the AI trade. The next focus for market watchers is whether Azure, Copilot, and Microsoft 365 can keep supporting growth while the company funds another wave of AI infrastructure.
