Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX) shares traded near $70.36 in Friday afternoon trading, down $2.25, or 3.10%, from the previous close of $72.61. The stock opened at $71.01 and moved between $69.76 and $71.91 as investors looked toward Netflix's Oct. 20 third-quarter earnings report. For NFLX holders using earnings week to gauge where you stand financially in the position, the move puts layoffs, engagement trends, and analyst calls back at the center of the NFLX story.

Intraday range matters

Friday's low of $69.76 left the stock below its $71.01 opening price. The session high of $71.91 also stayed below the previous close of $72.61, showing that buyers had not fully reversed the early weakness by Friday afternoon.

The $2.15 gap between the session's low and high points to a volatile setup before earnings. The trading action reflected a mix of company-specific news and broader questions about growth in streaming.

Earnings date is set

Netflix is set to report third-quarter 2026 results on Oct. 20. Consensus estimates call for earnings of $0.82 per share and revenue of $12.87 billion.

Those estimates imply earnings growth of about 39% and revenue growth of about 11.8% from the year-earlier quarter. The numbers matter because Netflix is being judged not only on subscriber scale but also on how much profit it can generate from pricing, advertising, and international growth.

Company guidance is in focus

Netflix has forecast third-quarter revenue of $12.86 billion, implying about 12% growth, or 11% on an FX-neutral basis. FX-neutral results strip out currency swings to show how the underlying business performed.

The company also projects a third-quarter operating margin of 33.2%, up from 28.2% a year earlier. Operating margin shows the share of revenue left after operating costs.

Job cuts add pressure

Netflix is laying off roughly 1,000 employees, or about 6% of its workforce, in its biggest job cuts since 2022. The bulk of the cuts are in product, technology, legal, and human-resources teams.

The restructuring landed less than a week before earnings. Co-CEOs Greg Peters and Ted Sarandos told employees in a memo that Netflix needs to be disciplined about where it prioritizes people and resources while saying the business remains on track for its full-year forecast.

Analyst views are split

Huber Research analyst Craig Huber downgraded Netflix to underweight from overweight on Tuesday. Huber also cut the firm's price target to $70 from $85, with concerns including audience engagement and planned workforce reductions.

Jefferies reaffirmed a Buy rating on Netflix with an $85 price target on Oct. 15. The firm pointed to expected revenue growth driven by subscriber expansion, price increases, and advertising revenue growth through 2029.

Zacks lists Netflix with a Zacks Rank #4, or Sell, and says the consensus earnings estimate for the upcoming quarter has remained unchanged over the past 30 days.

Engagement remains a concern

Recent market chatter has focused on U.S. cancellations, slowing growth, and softer viewing trends. Average daily time spent per active U.S. user reached 73.2 minutes in the third quarter, up from 70.2 minutes a year earlier but down from 77 minutes in the first quarter.

That marked a second straight quarterly decline from the first-quarter level. Stocktwits sentiment around NFLX fell to bearish from neutral ahead of the earnings report, reflecting a more cautious retail mood.

Bottom line

NFLX is lower in Friday afternoon trading as the market weighs near-term pressure against Netflix's earnings and margin outlook. Readers looking to start investing in large-cap streaming names are weighing whether the current pullback offers a reasonable entry or signals more downside risk ahead. The next major test is the Oct. 20 report, where investors will focus on revenue growth, advertising progress, engagement trends, and whether cost cuts support profitability.
