9 Reasons To Never Eat at Sonic

Sonic can be an affordable option if you're trying to stretch your eating-out budget. The drive-in format brings back a little nostalgia, the drink menu offers an almost overwhelming number of combinations, and late-night hours are convenient. Its newest value promotions also prove the chain knows customers are paying closer attention to what fast food costs.

Still, there are reasons a health- and budget-conscious diner might think twice before making Sonic a regular stop. From surprisingly large nutrition numbers to documented food-safety actions and uneven customer satisfaction, the case against Sonic is more substantial than simply disliking its burgers. Here are the issues worth knowing.

Some Sonic meals are extremely high in sodium

Sonic's SuperSonic Double Cheeseburger with mustard, ketchup and mayo contains 1,040 calories and 1,970 milligrams of sodium. Its jalapeno mustard-only version lists 970 calories and 1,850 milligrams.

For someone trying to keep sodium in check, either burger uses up a substantial share of the recommended daily limit before a side or drink is added.

Sonic's sweet drinks add a lot of sugar

The drink menu deserves just as much scrutiny as the food. A medium Cherry Limeade contains about 64 grams of sugar, while a Route 44 reaches roughly 132 grams.

Those numbers make Sonic's famous beverages easy to underestimate, especially when a large drink accompanies an already calorie-dense meal. A diet version offers a much lighter alternative.

Sonic was affected by a previous food recall

Sonic has previously been affected by a significant food-safety recall. In 2007, Sonic's ready-to-use peanut butter topping was included in the recall of peanut products associated with a Salmonella outbreak.

The topping was removed from affected restaurants. The FDA did not find Salmonella in Sonic's topping or link illnesses to Sonic products, and this was nearly 20 years ago.

One Florida Sonic was temporarily shut down

The enforcement record gets more serious in some cases. A Coral Springs, Florida, Sonic was temporarily closed following a November 2024 complaint inspection that recorded six high-priority, four intermediate, and seven basic violations.

Florida describes high-priority violations as conditions that could directly contribute to foodborne illness or injury. The restaurant must correct the problems before reopening.

Customer satisfaction has improved, but Sonic still trails the quick-service restaurant average

Sonic's latest ACSI score is actually a bright spot: it rose 5% to 77 in 2026. Even so, the overall quick-service restaurant average was 79, putting Sonic below the industry benchmark.

The result does not mean that customers dislike Sonic, but it does show that the chain still has room to improve the experience compared with many competitors.

App frustrations keep showing up in customer reviews

The Sonic app has a much better overall rating than its critics might suggest, with a 4.6-star Google Play rating and more than 750,000 reviews at the time of writing. Yet recent reviews repeatedly mention login failures, discounts not applying, crashes, slow performance, and gift-card problems.

Those reviews are anecdotal, but recurring complaints matter when promotions and ordering depend so heavily on the app.

Sonic's value depends heavily on catching the right deal

Sonic has responded to price-conscious customers with its June 2026 $7 Big Deal Meal and a refreshed $1.99 menu. That is good news for careful shoppers, but it also means the difference between a reasonable Sonic meal and an expensive one could depend on knowing the current promotion. Buying individual items without a deal may get expensive quickly.

The drive-in format may mean longer waits

Sonic's drive-in stalls are central to the brand's identity, but the format also creates a different service experience from a conventional counter-service restaurant. Orders are delivered to individual cars, and delays become particularly noticeable during busy periods.

ACSI's industry data places average satisfaction for checkout and delivery speed at 84 for 2026.

A smaller order may be a much smarter Sonic order

The good news is that avoiding the worst of Sonic's menu does not require avoiding the restaurant altogether. A Jr. Double Cheeseburger contains 390 calories and 870 milligrams of sodium, compared with 1,040 calories and 1,970 milligrams of sodium for the larger double cheeseburger with sauces. Pairing a smaller burger with water or a lower-sugar drink represents a very different meal.

Bottom line

The argument against Sonic is strongest for diners who prioritize nutrition, predictable value, and consistency. The chain's menu includes some surprisingly heavy combinations, while documented inspections show that food-safety problems have occurred at individual locations. At the same time, Sonic's ACSI score improved in 2026, and its new value menus suggest the company is responding to customers' concerns about price.

That makes "never eat at Sonic" less of a literal rule and more of a reminder to order carefully, especially when trying to save on groceries and fast food. Check the nutrition information before choosing a burger, pay particular attention to sodium and sugary drinks, compare promotions before paying full price, and remember that inspection results are location-specific.
