The S&P 500's cyclically adjusted price-to-earnings (CAPE) ratio closed at 41.67 in early October, more than double the 156-year average of 17.42 and within reach of the all-time peak of 44.19 set in December 1999.

The reading sits in the top 1% of roughly 1,700 monthly observations in Robert Shiller's Yale dataset, and reviewing where you stand financially in your equity allocation gives you a framework for adjusting exposure before the next earnings season.

The CAPE has held above 40 since May 2026 for the first time since 1999

The ratio first crossed above 40 in January 1999 during the dot-com era, and it has sustained readings above that threshold continuously since May 2026, marking only the second extended stretch above 40 in more than 145 years of data, KuCoin documented.

The daily CAPE estimate stood at 41.62 as of October 8, translating to a cyclically adjusted earnings yield of approximately 2.40% for your invested dollars, Finnovate noted.

The Buffett Indicator exceeded 237% of gross domestic product in September

Total United States (U.S.) stock market capitalization relative to gross domestic product (GDP) exceeded 237% in September 2026, clearing the 200% level that analysts generally consider a sign of significant overvaluation. Buffett has long argued that comparing total market capitalization to a country's economic output reveals more about broad overvaluation than any single earnings-based metric, KuCoin reported.

Better-than-expected earnings and capital spending on artificial intelligence (AI) have kept the indexes climbing despite the elevated multiple, the Motley Fool noted. The tension between corporate profit growth and the CAPE's warning is the central question for your portfolio.

The S&P 500 lost 49% after the only prior CAPE reading above 40

The ratio first exceeded 30 in August 1929 before the Dow lost 89% of its value, and the only prior reading above 40 peaked at 44.19 in December 1999 before the S&P 500 dropped 49% and the Nasdaq Composite fell 78% by October 2002, The Motley Fool showed.

Readings above 30 also preceded the Q4 2018 decline of roughly 20% and the 34% COVID-19 crash in early 2020 that erased a third of the S&P 500's value in 33 calendar days.

Bespoke tracked 27 bull and bear markets in the S&P 500 since 1929

Bespoke Investment Group studied 27 bull and bear market cycles in the S&P 500 going back to September 1929, giving you a benchmark for how long downturns last relative to recoveries, The Motley Fool reported.

  • The average bear market bottomed in 286 calendar days, or roughly 9.5 months, and no bear market in the last 97 years lasted longer than 630 calendar days.
  • The average bull market lasted 1,023 calendar days, approximately 3.6 times the length of the average bear market.
  • A total of 14 of the 27 bull markets outlasted the longest bear market, and the bull market that began in October 2022 has become the ninth longest in the dataset.

The top 10 S&P 500 constituents hold 37.8% of total index weight

The 10 largest S&P 500 constituents accounted for 37.8% of total index weight as of August 31, 2026, Finnovate reported. This indicates that your S&P 500 index fund places roughly $38 of every $100 into just 10 companies

Alphabet's capital expenditure reached $80.6 billion in the first six months of 2026, up from $39.6 billion in the same period of 2025, illustrating the scale of AI infrastructure spending that has helped push mega-cap valuations higher.

All 107 rolling 20-year periods since 1900 produced positive total returns

Crestmont Research calculated rolling 20-year total returns including dividends for the S&P 500 and its predecessor indexes going back to 1900, and all 107 periods from 1900 through 2025 delivered positive average annual total returns, The Motley Fool outlined.

Research from the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco links high CAPE readings to lower inflation-adjusted equity returns over horizons around ten years, yet the consistent positivity across every 20-year window suggests that extending your holding period reduces the drag of buying at an elevated multiple, Finnovate documented.

The 30-year Treasury yield reached 5.60% alongside rising margin debt

The 30-year U.S. Treasury yield stood at 5.60% as of October 8, with the 30-year Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) real yield at 3.31%, offering you a risk-free return that competes with the CAPE's 2.40% earnings yield, Finnovate showed.

Headwinds, including rapidly rising margin debt, persistently elevated inflation, and surging long-duration bond yields, add pressure on top of the stretched valuations, the Motley Fool reported. This narrows the margin for error in your equity holdings if any of those forces intensify.

Bottom line

A Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis analysis from June 2026 suggested U.S. corporate valuations look less extreme when measured against free cash flow rather than net income. The must-have investing apps for tracking multiple valuation metrics can help you weigh both sides of the debate.

Record S&P 500 buybacks have helped sustain the bull market from October 2022 alongside the elevated valuation. The CAPE climbed from 13.32 at the March 2009 bottom to 41.67 in early October, and aligning your equity weighting with your actual time horizon gives you the clearest approach to navigating the valuation debate.
