Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) shares were trading at $372.27 in Friday afternoon trading, up $18.16, or 5.13%, from their $354.11 previous close. The stock opened at $358.92, touched a $374.36 session high, and held near the top of the day's trading range. A single-session gain of this size can shift where you stand financially if Tesla carries meaningful weight in your portfolio. The move followed Tesla's third-quarter delivery report, which came in ahead of Wall Street expectations.

Delivery beat estimates

Tesla delivered 486,532 vehicles in the third quarter, ahead of the FactSet consensus estimate of 461,000. The result was roughly 5.5% above the estimate, making the delivery update a catalyst for Friday's rally. Consensus is the average estimate collected from Wall Street analysts.

Model 3 and Model Y led

The Model 3 and Model Y remained the core of Tesla's vehicle business, with 478,237 deliveries in the quarter. Other models accounted for 8,295 deliveries. Total deliveries still fell 2.1% from 497,099 in the third quarter of 2025, keeping the year-over-year comparison in focus even after the estimate beat.

Production trailed deliveries

Tesla produced 464,391 vehicles during the third quarter. Deliveries were higher than production, pointing to a quarter in which shipment volume outpaced factory output. Tesla said vehicle deliveries and storage deployments are only two measures of financial performance, with net income and cash flow to be announced with full quarterly results.

Energy storage added scale

Tesla deployed 13.7 gigawatt-hours of energy storage products in the quarter. A gigawatt-hour is a measure of how much electricity a battery system can store and deliver. The number matters because energy storage has become a larger part of Tesla's story beyond vehicle deliveries.

Pre-report caution was high

The delivery beat landed after analysts had been bracing for a softer report earlier in the week. Cantor Fitzgerald had expected 421,758 vehicle deliveries, below a Visible Alpha consensus of 448,679, while maintaining an Overweight rating and a $485.00 price target. The actual delivery figure topped both of those pre-report estimates.

Analyst targets diverged

JPMorgan analyst Rajat Gupta maintained a Neutral rating and lowered Tesla's price target to $415.00 from $445.00 earlier in the week. Other recent analyst actions showed a wide spread: StoneX maintained a Buy rating with a $475.00 target on Sept. 25, while Goldman Sachs maintained a Neutral rating with a $360.00 target on Sept. 16. Price targets are analyst estimates of where a stock could trade over a stated period, not guarantees.

Friday range stayed firm

Shares started the session at $358.92, which also marked the day's low. They rose as high as $374.36 before trading at $372.27 in the afternoon. The latest price kept Tesla $18.16 above the prior close and left the stock up 5.13% on the day.

Bottom line

Tesla's delivery beat shifted the near-term focus from pre-report caution to the quality of the quarter behind the headline number. Retail traders looking to start investing in Tesla are watching this setup closely as a potential entry point. Market watchers are now focused on margins, pricing, production efficiency, and whether energy storage could add support when Tesla posts full third-quarter financial results after market close on October 21, 2026.
