Trader Joe's has some unique finds that can help you out when you're on a tight budget. About 80% of what the grocer sells is under its own private label, which helps keep many prices low.

The store can help you save on essentials like household cleaners or let you buy a sweet treat without souring your bank account. Below, you'll find frozen dinners, pantry staples, snacks, and even a bottle of wine, many priced under $5. Trader Joe's doesn't sell groceries online, so you'll need to shop in person.

Check out these Trader Joe's savings hacks if you're on a tight budget and want a good bargain.

Mandarin Orange Chicken

Price: $5.49

One of Trader Joe's most popular options is Mandarin Orange Chicken. The chicken comes in a 22-ounce bag with sauce and works great on its own, or you can serve it over rice for a filling dinner option.

It has won Trader Joe's annual Customer Choice Awards so many times that it was retired to the company's Product Hall of Fame. For the best results, Trader Joe's recommends baking the chicken in a 400-degree oven, heating the sauce in a skillet or wok, and then tossing the chicken in the sauce until it caramelizes a bit.

You can microwave the sauce instead if you're short on time. Chowhound calls it a solid stand-in for restaurant takeout at about a third of the price.

Bananas

Price: 23 cents

Trader Joe's began selling bananas on a per-banana basis almost 25 years ago after a remark from a customer, and the store still sells them like that today. According to Trader Joe's, a longtime shopper at its Sun City, Arizona, store said buying single bananas would make her life easier. Former CEO Dan Bane later explained on the "Inside Trader Joe's" podcast that she worried she wouldn't get to the fourth banana in a prepackaged bunch.

You might be surprised that you can get bananas cheaper per banana at Trader Joe's than at bigger retailers. The price held at 19 cents for more than two decades before rising to 23 cents in 2024. If you prefer organic, those cost 29 cents each.

Joe's O's Cereal

Price: $1.99

Cereal is a great staple to have in your pantry, and Trader Joe's has you covered with its Joe's O's Cereal. The cereal is similar to other name brands but costs less than name-brand Cheerios at retailers like Walmart.

A 12-ounce box of Joe's O's works out to about 17 cents per ounce. At Walmart, an 8.9-ounce box of Cheerios was recently on rollback for $2.97, or about 33 cents per ounce. Walmart's own Great Value Toasted O's are a closer match at $1.97 for 12 ounces.

Joe's O's are made with toasted whole grain oats and have 4 grams of fiber per 1 3/4-cup serving, according to Trader Joe's.

Charles Shaw Merlot

Price: $3.49

Trader Joe's is well known for its Charles Shaw store-brand wines, and you can find a wide variety of options, including the Charles Shaw Merlot, which comes in a 750-milliliter bottle to share with family and friends or have a nice glass on a quiet night at home.

Trader Joe's describes this merlot as fruit-forward, with notes of ripe berries and vanilla spice. It suggests pairing it with prime rib, grilled ahi tuna, or red sauce pasta dishes, and it also goes well with cheeses like cheddar, Swiss, and chèvre.

The brand earned the nickname "Two-Buck Chuck" when it launched at $1.99 a bottle in 2002, but prices now vary by state.

Multi-Purpose Cleaner Cedarwood & Sage

Price: $3.99

Skip all the specialty cleaners and save money with the Multi-Purpose Cleaner Cedarwood & Sage. The cleaner comes in a 34-ounce bottle with a fresh scent that works on multiple surfaces in your home, like countertops, tile, and glass.

Trader Joe's recently updated the formula, removing the synthetic dye and a few other synthetic ingredients while keeping the same crisp scent.

The plant-based cleaner is made with real cedarwood and sage oils and coconut-derived surfactants. It's biodegradable, it's never tested on animals, and you can use it on any water-safe surface, including mirrors and walls. Food Republic describes the scent as fresh and a little woodsy.

Organic Silver Dollar Pancakes

Price: $3.49

Breakfast can be an important meal, but you rarely have time to make something and sit down to eat it. So heat up some Organic Silver Dollar Pancakes in the microwave and grab as many or as few as you want to spread them out over multiple mornings.

The bite-sized organic pancakes need only a minute or two in the microwave, according to Trader Joe's, which describes them as having a home-style, from-scratch taste. Top them with syrup, butter, fruit, or nut butter.

A Parade tester who compared seven frozen pancake brands found these came closest to homemade. Their small size also makes them a hit with kids.

Rainbow's End Trail Mix Bars

Price: $4.99

Sometimes, you need a quick, healthy snack to keep you going, so check out the Rainbow's End Trail Mix Bars. The box comes with five bars loaded with nuts, raisins, and candy pieces to make it an affordable and tasty snack for your bag or lunchbox.

That works out to about $1 per bar. The bars are based on Trader Joe's Rainbow's End Trail Mix, a customer favorite for nearly 25 years, and use the same mix of peanuts, almonds, raisins, and candy-coated milk chocolate pieces.

Each 1.41-ounce bar has 200 calories, 2 grams of fiber, and 6 grams of protein.

Freeze Dried Strawberries

Price: $3.49

The 1.2-ounce bag of Freeze-Dried Strawberries is a good option to toss in your pantry for a quick bite, or you can add them to baked goods for an extra kick.

Unlike many conventionally dried berries, these strawberry slices have no added sugar, according to Trader Joe's. The freeze-drying process keeps them flavorful with a light crunch, and they're especially good sprinkled over cereal or mixed into trail mix. They're light and shelf-stable, too, which is why they've long been a backpacking staple.

Check out the Trader Joe's website, which has searchable recipes to see which ones may be good for your freeze-dried strawberries.

Pulled Chicken Salsa Verde

Price: $8.99

Toss some Pulled Chicken Salsa Verde into your freezer to add to big-batch recipes for multiple meals or a quick and easy dinner on a weeknight.

The 16-ounce container includes chicken with a tasty salsa verde, roasted tomatillos, green chiles, cilantro, onion, and garlic. It starts with seasoned, boneless, skinless chicken breast that's slow-cooked in the salsa verde and then shredded, so it's fully cooked and ready to heat.

A half-cup serving has 100 calories and 18 grams of protein. Spoon it into tacos or tortilla wraps, serve it over rice, or pile it on a salad. Reviewers at Hungry Girl praised the tender, well-seasoned chicken and its mild heat.

Ultra Moisturizing Hand Cream

Price: $4.99

Keep your hands hydrated during the dry winter months with Ultra Moisturizing Hand Cream. The hand cream can save you extra money compared to other beauty retailers that may carry smaller sizes than Trader Joe's 3-ounce cream while costing more.

The paraben-free cream is made with coconut oil, hemp seed oil, and 20% shea butter, plus sunflower seed oil, sweet almond oil, and vitamins C and E. Aldi

Reviewers compared it to L'Occitane's shea butter hand cream, which has many of the same ingredients and was selling for $30 for a 5.1-ounce tube. The cream comes in a flexible metal tube packed in a giftable box.

String Cheese

Price: $3.99

Kids and adults love string cheese for an easy snack or to add to recipes that can elevate the basic refrigerator staple into something more elegant. The Trader Joe's recipes section may hold some surprises for string cheese lovers.

Trader Joe's String Cheese comes from a fourth-generation, family-owned Wisconsin cheese company, and it's made with milk from cows raised without rBST. The mild, mozzarella-style cheese pulls apart easily, and the 12-ounce package makes it simple to grab a stick for lunchboxes or after-school snacks.

According to Trader Joe's, the whole process, from fresh milk to packaged cheese, takes only about three hours.

Organic Baked Whole Grain Bars

Price: $4.69

Add some whimsy to your snack pantry with Organic Iced Oatmeal Baked Whole Grain Bars. The bars come in iced oatmeal or chocolate chip varieties, so pick your favorite or grab one to enjoy at home.

The Iced Oatmeal bars combine hearty oats, sweet fig paste, and baking spice for a dense, satisfying bite with a hint of vanilla. They're organic, gluten-free, and kosher, according to Trader Joe's, and each bar weighs 1.27 ounces, so they're easy to toss in a bag for a midmorning snack.

The Organic Chocolate Chip Baked Whole Grain Bars sell for the same $4.69 if you'd rather mix things up.

Kaspars Grinvalds/Adobe Groceries shopping list on phone

Trader Joe's is a good option to add to your list of grocery stores if you're trying to keep some cash in your wallet.

Another great way to save money on groceries is to create a shopping list before you go to Trader Joe's and then stick to it.

Walking through the store and picking up some impulse buys can be tempting, but a list can help you fill your cart while keeping cash in your bank account.
