Big Lots is fighting a losing battle against bankruptcy, but a new move might save up to half of the remaining locations.
The initial Chapter 11 filing occurred in September, and it’s been a rollercoaster ride of ups and downs ever since. The discount retail chain was at the forefront in specializing around closeout and overstock merchandise, which can be a smart way to save money, but has faced challenges as digital competition in the market has increased.
Big Lots is currently advertising store closing sales for the approximately 800 remaining locations, but those prices could disappear if their new deal is approved.

Big Lots filed for bankruptcy
The retail company initially announced the closure of 40 stores in July 2024 as an attempt to stave off bankruptcy. However, by September, filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy became necessary. At that point, an additional 400 locations were expected to be shut down, with doors closing forever.
The company’s website announced all stores are closing, and currently, you can save 30% off the entire store. To help you avoid a disappointing trip to an already closed location, here are the stores you won’t be able to visit any longer.
There are 901 Big Lots! locations remaining, as of Jan. 3, 2025. The following locations have already been closed:

- 710 Academy Drive, Bessemer
- 6275 University Drive N.W., Huntsville
- 1109 280 Byp, Phenix City
- 1957 Cobbs Ford Rd., Prattville

Huntsville has two Big Lots! locations, so residents will still be able to shop at the retailer despite losing one store.

Big Lots may have a second chance
Initially, it looked as though the company would be sold to Nexus Capital Management. However, when that deal fell through, another company stepped up to make an offer.
A deal with Gordon Brothers Retail Partner could enable Variety Wholesalers to acquire 200 to 400 Big Lots stores and up to two distribution centers. The agreement is being challenged by several Big Lots vendors on the basis that it would repay lenders but leave trade creditors holding the losses.
The final determination is pending approval by the bankruptcy court.
Bottom line
All current Big Lots locations are already in the process of liquidating stock and are offering up to 30% off everything in the stores — and we mean everything. So be quick to take advantage of it, whether you want to redecorate, revamp your patio, or even stock up on groceries (yes!)
The future of the retailer may be up in the air, but it’s a great time for customers to grab a favorite cash back credit card and go on a savings-filled shopping spree.
