Kohl’s Closed 27 Stores Already in 2025 (Are More Likely?)

Department stores are failing in today's economy, and Kohl's might be at risk. The company has tried everything from rearranging store layouts to musical chairs with their CEOs, but that hasn't translated to increased sales.

Newly appointed CEO Michael Bender shared optimistic feedback on Kohl's first-quarter results, announced on May 29th, saying the performance exceeded expectations. The report showed a continuous decrease in net sales, but an increase in gross margins, indicating their strategy to close underperforming stores may be working.

However, that could mean more locations will close this year, and consumers who save money shopping at Kohl's are left wondering if their local store is at risk.

• 21000 Town Center Ave., Spanish Fort

Alabama still has 13 other Kohl's locations in the state. Employees in the closed location have been offered competitive severance packages or the opportunity to apply internally for other jobs.

• 13909 Chenal Parkway, Little Rock

Arkansas still has seven Kohl's locations in the state, three of which are around Little Rock.

• 134 N. El Camino Real, Encinitas
• 43782 Christy St., Fremont
• 350 Showers Drive, Mountain View
• 1116 1st St., Napa
• 4525 Rosewood Drive, Pleasanton
• 1896 Arden Way, Point West (Sacramento)
• 5010 Northgate Drive, San Rafael
• 205 Madonna Road, San Luis Obispo
• 8739 S. Sepulveda Blvd., Westchester

The Golden State lost 10 Kohl's retail stores — the most of any state. There are still 106 locations left in California, so shoppers won't have trouble finding places to browse the department store chain in person.

• 6584 S. Parker Road, Arapahoe Crossing (Aurora)

There are still two Kohl's stores in Aurora and a total of 22 throughout the entire state of Colorado.

• 2050 W. Liddell Road, Duluth

There is only one location that closed in Georgia, leaving 32 others remaining in the northern part of the state.

• 400 N. Milwaukee St., Boise

There is one Kohl's location that shut down in Idaho. However, the state still has five left for shoppers to enjoy.

• 11860 S. Route 59, Plainfield
• 3000 Spring Hill Ring Road, Spring Hill (West Dundee)

Illinois is now down to 64 Kohl's stores in the state, as these two locations shut their doors for the last time.

• 72 Princeton Hightstown Road, East Windsor

New Jersey is now down to 37 stores, but there are still plenty of Kohl's locations nearby for most residents of the state.

• 501 Technology Center Drive, Stoughton

The Bay State currently has 23 locations left. The store in Stoughton closed as part of the company's downsizing efforts.

• 4150 Hunt Road, Blue Ash
• 100 Cincinnati Mills Drive, Forest Park (Cincinnati)

Ohio is lost two Kohl's locations but still has 58 stores available for shoppers to enjoy.

• 351 W Schuylkill Road, Pottstown

The Keystone State lost only one Kohl's location, leaving 50 other ones open throughout the rest of Pennsylvania for shoppers.

• 10010 N.E. Halsey St., Portland Gateway

Oregon is now down 10 stores since the Portland location closed. However, there are still plenty of Kohl's stores nearby for shoppers to take advantage of.

• 18224 Preston Road, North Dallas

Dallas lost one of its two Kohl's stores, with 88 remaining locations throughout the Lone Star State.

• 13319 S. 3600 W. Ste 13LOT, Riverton

The Riverton location closed, but twelve stores remain in Utah. 

• 2100 Centreville Road, Herndon
• 100 Gristmill Plaza., Williamsburg

According to the Google business listing, the Herndon location is already permanently closed. Luckily, Virginia is home to 30 other locations.

Kohl's has suffered 12 consecutive fiscal quarters of sales declines, and their share price plummeted over 50% in 2024. The major retail brand operates about 1,100 stores nationwide, so the total cuts represent less than 3% of their retail locations.

Kohl's isn't the only company slated for shutdowns. Department store rival Macy's also revealed it will be closing 66 stores early this year. So get ready to grab your favorite top rewards credit cards and hit some store closure sales.
