Anthropic pushed its planned initial public offering from October to November, still targeting $100 billion in capital at a $2 trillion valuation. The delay gives the company time to show Q3 results shaped by OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra launch on September 3, which captured roughly 13% of enterprise AI spending tracked by Ramp versus 8% for Claude Fable, Anthropic's flagship model.

The size of the IPO makes it relevant to your financial fitness even if you never buy a single share, because the pricing could reset how the market values every private AI company in your portfolio's orbit. The valuation math, the competitive shift, and the profitability question all feed into what investors should weigh.

The valuation multiple has compressed from 30 times revenue to roughly 18

The Motley Fool noted that when the $2 trillion target first surfaced, Anthropic's annualized revenue run rate sat around $65 billion, implying a price-to-sales multiple of roughly 30 times. The company now expects annualized revenue to exceed $110 billion by year-end, which brings the implied multiple down to approximately 18 times.

An 18-times revenue multiple remains elevated by traditional standards, but it is meaningfully lower than the roughly 94 times sales SpaceX commanded at its June IPO. The compression reflects how fast Anthropic's revenue is growing rather than any reduction in the asking price.

Q2 revenue of $11.5 billion represented a 14-fold jump from a year earlier

CNBC confirmed that Anthropic's preliminary Q2 2026 revenue exceeded $11.5 billion, up from $787 million in Q2 2025 and $4.73 billion in Q1 2026. Full-year 2025 revenue was approximately $10 billion, meaning the company matched its entire prior year in a single quarter.

Forbes columnist Ron Schmelzer questioned whether the $2 trillion target constituted bubble territory, noting that even Anthropic's own projections of $190 billion to $200 billion in revenue by 2028 would still leave the valuation at roughly 10 times sales two years from now.

Anthropic posted its first operating profit of $559 million in Q2

KuCoin's flash report confirmed that Anthropic posted $559 million in adjusted operating profit during Q2 2026, marking the first time a frontier AI lab had reported a profitable quarter. Compute costs fell from 71 cents to 56 cents per dollar of revenue over the course of the quarter.

The profitability milestone carries an important qualifier. Adjusted operating income excludes stock-based compensation and other non-cash charges, so the company may not be generating positive free cash flow on a GAAP basis. For IPO investors, the question is whether Q3 extends the trend or whether it was a one-quarter anomaly shaped by discounted compute agreements.

OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra overtook Claude Fable on enterprise spend in two weeks

Ramp's corporate expense data showed GPT-6 Astra reaching roughly 13% of tracked enterprise AI spending versus about 8% for Claude Fable within two weeks of Astra's September 3 launch, Benzinga documented, citing Reuters. Key competitive shifts include the following.

  • Astra captured 13% of Ramp-tracked enterprise AI spending versus 8% for Claude Fable.
  • OpenRouter users spent more on OpenAI models than Anthropic for the first time in over 2.5 years.
  • Meta Platforms reportedly began reducing its reliance on Anthropic models.
  • Anthropic is weighing a new model release before the IPO to counter the shift.

The November delay gives Anthropic a Q3 data point shaped by competition

Filing in October would have shown investors Q2 results, a quarter where Anthropic had no frontier-level competition from OpenAI. A November filing adds Q3, which captures the full impact of Astra's September 3 launch and whether Anthropic's enterprise position held, weakened, or rebounded.

Investors should expect the S-1 to address the Ramp data directly. A filing that does not explain the enterprise spending shift or demonstrate a recovery would leave the most important competitive question unanswered at the moment the company asks the public for $100 billion.

Durable margins will matter more than revenue growth at the IPO price

Revenue growth of 14 times year over year is extraordinary by any standard. The variable that determines whether the $2 trillion valuation holds is whether the 56-cent compute cost per revenue dollar stays stable or climbs as the company scales into new model generations and absorbs the cost of competing with Astra.

A second consecutive quarter of operating profit in Q3 would strengthen the IPO thesis considerably. A quarter where revenue grew but profitability reversed would raise questions about whether the Q2 figure was structural or temporary.

Bottom line

Anthropic's revenue trajectory has compressed the $2 trillion valuation multiple from 30 times to roughly 18 times in a matter of months. The Q2 operating profit of $559 million showed for the first time that a frontier AI lab can make money. The November delay gives the market a look at Q3, a quarter where GPT-6 Astra grabbed 13% of enterprise spend and overtook Claude Fable on two independent tracking platforms.

The Q3 profitability trend will likely determine how investors assess the IPO price. You can use must-have investing apps to track what could be one of the largest public offerings in history; watching for the Q3 margin data and the enterprise spending trajectory gives you the two numbers that matter most.
