Anthropic's S-1 states the company does not expect to pay dividends "for the foreseeable future," meaning the only way to pull income from the stock is to sell shares at whatever price the market sets. The filing also maps out 23 separate lock-up release dates stretching across the first year after the listing.
Choosing ANT as a path to doing better financially in retirement depends on the stock rising fast enough to cover your withdrawals while absorbing an $80.75 billion first-half net loss driven largely by non-cash charges and a share structure that caps public voting power at 50.1% of the total.

Every dollar of retirement income from this stock requires selling a piece of it
The S-1 filing makes clear that Anthropic does not plan to return cash to shareholders through dividends in any near-term timeframe, InvestingLive showed. For a retiree holding dividend-paying stocks like Apple or Microsoft, income arrives as a quarterly check without touching the position, but ANT offers no such arrangement.
Selling shares to cover living expenses shrinks the number of shares left to grow, and the price you receive depends entirely on how the market values the stock that month. With roughly 5,300 employees as of September 30 and a business still scaling toward sustained profitability, the stock's direction in any given quarter remains uncertain, Financer showed.
Twenty-three lock-up release dates spread insider selling across the first twelve months
Non-founder directors, officers, and certain employees may sell up to 10% of their holdings from the first trading day, with a further 35% released after full-year 2026 results, Leverage Shares showed. The remainder unlocks at the earlier of 180 days or first-quarter 2027 results.
Co-founders face a tighter schedule, with up to 29% available at the 180-day mark and the rest held until the earlier of 365 days or third-quarter 2027 results, Leverage Shares documented. The staggered structure means fresh insider supply enters the market at regular intervals throughout the first year, and every release adds selling pressure to the same shares a retiree may be trying to sell for income.
Insider shares begin entering the market within weeks of the initial public offering
Beyond the first-day release for insiders, additional tranches for other stockholders arrive on days 27, 48, 62, and 76 after the prospectus filing, Leverage Shares showed. Each release adds potential supply to a stock that a retiree may already be selling from to cover expenses.
- Lead underwriters Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley hold the authority to release locked shares early, a standard provision that could accelerate the supply timeline.
- Class N shares held by Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) and Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOGL) convert to Class A when sold, adding another layer of potential supply to the public float.
- Anthropic's total debt stood at $6.2 billion as of June 30, all of it in Amazon convertible notes that may eventually convert into up to 1.84 billion additional shares.
A retiree selling shares for income enters a market where insiders, institutional backers, and convertible noteholders are all positioned to sell into the same pool of buyers. The staggered schedule prevents a single flood, but the drip of new supply over 12 months creates persistent headwinds for anyone trying to generate cash from a shrinking position.
A $567 million operating loss in the third quarter followed the company's first-ever profit
Third-quarter 2026 revenue reached roughly $17 billion, up from $1.4 billion a year earlier, but the operating loss of $567 million reversed the $974 million operating profit reported in the second quarter, Financer showed. The swing illustrates how uneven the path toward sustained profitability remains.
First-half 2026 revenue hit $16.29 billion, up from $1.16 billion a year earlier, and the operating loss narrowed to $693 million from $8.06 billion in full-year 2025, Financer documented. The growth trajectory matters for a retirement portfolio because the stock price you sell into depends on whether the market believes profitability is arriving or slipping away.
Committed spending of roughly $895 billion flows to cloud providers, not to shareholders
The S-1 amendment lists at least $110 billion committed to Amazon Web Services (AWS), roughly $121.3 billion to Google Cloud, $44.9 billion to Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) Azure, and up to $120.5 billion to a SpaceX subsidiary, Financer showed. The total committed spend reaches approximately $895.4 billion.
Agreements signed between January 1 and June 1, 2026, alone added about $417 billion in future minimum payments, with another $100 billion committed after September 30, Financer documented. Every dollar of that spending builds infrastructure rather than shareholder returns, and a retirement portfolio holding ANT funds the buildout without receiving any income in exchange.
The sell cycle compounds against a position that generates no cash and faces persistent new supply
Cash, equivalents, and short-term investments totaled $131.65 billion as of June 30, Financer showed. The company has liquidity to operate, but none of it flows to the shareholders whose retirement accounts hold the stock. A retiree buying ANT accepts a position that demands selling to generate income, competing with insider supply every step of the way.
Bottom line
Revenue grew from $386 million in 2024 to $4.59 billion in 2025 and reached $16.29 billion in the first half of 2026 alone. The growth story is among the fastest in modern business, but the sell cycle it creates for income-dependent holders is just as real as the revenue line.
Deciding where to start investing retirement capital may come down to whether a stock that pays nothing, releases insider shares for a full year, and channels billions into infrastructure fits into a portfolio that delivers quarterly income. The S-1 does not indicate when dividends might begin, leaving the forced-sale dynamic in place for as long as you hold the position.
