Citizens Bank is one of the financial institutions proposing to close branches across the country. The company is following other banks, such as Bank of America, Capital One, PNC Bank, TD Bank, and U.S. Bank, which have decided to close branches and downsize their locations in the United States.

Delaware
- 460 East Main Street, Middletown
Citizens Bank has filed a closing notice for its East Main Street branch in Middletown, Delaware. Once it closes, you'll have to drive to Bear or New Castle to bank in person.
Massachusetts
- 539 Boston Turnpike, Shrewsbury
Citizens Bank plans to close its Boston Turnpike location in Shrewsbury in 2026. The next-closest locations are in Worcester and Westborough.
New York
- 2042 Chili Avenue, Rochester
When Citizens Bank closes its Chili Avenue location, you'll still have 10 branches in Rochester to choose from. With that many branches, closing one of them makes sense.
Ohio
- 3401 Richmond Road, Beachwood
The Beachwood, Ohio branch of Citizens Bank is closing, but there are just under 30 branches left in Cuyahoga County, including one in nearby Woodmere.
Pennsylvania
- 1025 Lehigh Avenue, Philadelphia
Although the Lehigh Avenue branch in Philadelphia is slated to close, you can still find more than 30 open branches in the City of Brotherly Love.
Rhode Island
- 300 Quaker Lane, Warwick
Citizens Bank has several branches in Kent County, including three that will remain open when the Quaker Lane branch closes.
Other banks closing branches
Citizens Bank is not alone. According to the National Community Reinvestment Coalition (NCRC), 217 branches closed nationwide in the first three months of 2026. But it's not all bleak. NCRC notes that in-person banking is seeing a resurgence, with 267 branches opened in that same period.
Some regions are seeing more closures than others. For example, the Northeast and California saw more closures than in Texas, Florida, and the Southeast.
Of the reported closures in January through March of 2026, TD Bank, Bank of America, and JPMorgan Chase accounted for almost half. Citizens Bank didn't make it in the top 10 for bank closures.
Why are banks closing branches?
So why the trend in bank closures? One of the biggest reasons is online banking. According to our Banking Behavior Study, 92% of people access their bank online at least once a month, and over half check their account online every day. This means there's less need to visit a physical branch.
Customers are moving more of their banking needs online, such as depositing checks, reviewing account balances, and more. That means some banks no longer need as many brick-and-mortar locations.

It can be difficult if your local bank branch closes. But there are still options to build wealth, such as with high-yield savings accounts.
