Dollar Tree stopped being a flat dollar store a while back, and plenty of what sits on those shelves now rings up well past $1.25. A higher price does not automatically mean a worse deal, but it does mean the item has to earn its spot.

Some of these picks have solid reviews behind them. Others have buyers warning about quality issues and prices that feel wrong for a dollar store. Here is what deserves cart space this month and what doesn't, as well as some other money mistakes to avoid.

Editor's note: Prices and availability are subject to change and may vary by location.

Idahoan Original Mashed Potatoes, 6.2 oz. Boxes

Price: $1.50 each

Mashed potatoes are a weeknight dinner lifesaver, and a box or two in the pantry means a side dish is never more than a few minutes of boiling water away. This is a brand plenty of shoppers already grab in the regular grocery aisle without thinking twice.

Dollar Tree's current listing shows three five-star reviews for this product. That's still a small sample size, but for a shelf-stable side at this price, the downside is a dollar and change.

Columbia Rotini Pasta, 20-oz. Bonus Boxes

Price: $1.50

Rotini handles just about everything, from a quick buttered noodle side to a cold pasta salad you bring to a potluck. These are 20-ounce bonus boxes, so you get more in the box than the standard size for not much more money.

Details and reviews were not available for this one, but dry pasta is about as low-risk as grocery shopping gets. It keeps for ages in the pantry, so if the price works for your budget, it is an easy thing to stock a few of.

C.O.S. Storage Container With Clip Lock Lid, 1.45 Qt

Price: $4.00 each

A clip-lock lid sounds like what you want for stacking leftovers in the fridge or wrangling small craft supplies without lids popping loose. At 1.45 quarts, it is a sensible everyday size, and it rates 4 stars across 113 reviews.

Dig into those reviews, though, and the picture changes. Austinzoo wrote, "I bought 5 of these last month. One broke right away (cracked when I pick it up) and the rest have broken as well. Not worth $3 just to 'rent' them for a month."

Another buyer put it more gently: "Good for light weight items... Bins crack easily... Try not to put too much in them."

Plenty of shoppers report cracking and breakage, and one flagged being charged $4 in-store for a bin listed at $3 online. At $4 a pop, that is a lot of risk for a container that may not survive the month. Leave this one.

Home Decor Woven Straw Basket, Assorted Colors

Price: $5.00 each

A woven basket pulls double duty as storage and decor, and that is exactly how buyers are using this one. It holds a 5-star rating across 4 ratings, and it comes in assorted colors, so what is on the shelf varies by store.

Charincal bought one for plants and then went back for more: "It is well made and I went back to buy more. It is big enough to hold 5 4 inch plants and it makes the plants look so good."

The Master Reviewer keeps them on a vanity and a coffee table for remotes, adding, "Can't beat the price & the quality."

Worth knowing before you grab it: the same store carries smaller woven baskets at $1.25, so this is the splurge version. Going by the reviews, the size, the weave, and the build quality are what the extra buys you.

Stainless Steel Colander, 1-ct.

Price: $5.00

Draining a pot of pasta or rinsing produce for a holiday side calls for something that will not warp or crack when hot water hits it, and stainless steel is the material most cooks reach for. It is the kind of tool you use for years and never think about again.

There is no track record here, since the listing has zero reviews so far, and the page does not provide additional size or product details beyond identifying it as stainless steel. Even so, a metal colander at $5 is a fair gamble for a backup or a first kitchen, as long as you eyeball it in person first.

Storage Essentials Stackable Drawer, 12.9x8.8x6 in

Price: $6.00

Stackable drawers quietly fix a closet or craft room mess, since you can pull one open instead of digging through a single deep bin. At 12.9 by 8.8 by 6 inches, this one is sized for art supplies, small toys, or folded odds and ends alike.

The listing includes product details, and shoppers have praised the drawers for their sturdiness and stackability. If you are trying to get a closet or playroom under control before the holidays, the stacking is the part that actually does the work.

Home Collection Rotating Bath Organizer, 1-ct.

Price: $7.00 each

A rotating organizer sounds handy for spinning through shampoo, conditioner, and soap without knocking bottles off a cramped shower ledge. At $7, it is the most expensive thing on this list by a wide margin.

The single reviewer, Livvy, gave quality a 3 out of 5 but value a 1 out of 5, writing, "Decent quality, horrible price. Considering Family Dollar and Dollar Tree are owned by the same company keep the higher price items in Family Dollar, where they belong."

With one review, closeout stock, and a price that steep, your money goes further elsewhere.

Bottom line

A higher sticker on a dollar store shelf does not make something a bargain, and it does not make it a ripoff either. The buys that hold up tend to be the ones with real reviews behind them, where shoppers describe using the thing for months instead of replacing it.

The misses show up fast in the feedback, with complaints about poor quality or a price that feels out of step with the aisle. Read a few reviews before you commit, and look for other ways to save on groceries while you are at it.
